Many people struggle to “switch off” during the festive period. Even when they finally stop working and take their break for the season, their mind still races.

Colouring offers something different from scrolling through social media as a distraction.

It gently engages the mind without overstimulation, helping mental noise settle naturally.

For tired minds and emotionally full days, this kind of quiet focus can feel deeply restorative.

Therapeutic colouring books are designed to support this slower rhythm, without pressure or perfection.

They simply offer a quiet space and place to leave life’s pressures behind and engage in a self-directed, relaxing, therapeutic intervention.

Today’s colouring offering is a pot of cyclamen. They often come in colours: red, white, and pink. For the pot, choose any colour you like.

Happy colouring!

Last week, we started talking about psychological decompression and being able to slow down enough during the festive season to “catch enough time to care for yourself” and recuperate after a long year.

One of such techniques is colouring. The festive season can be joyful but overwhelming too. Expectations, social commitments, and emotional overload can quietly push the nervous system into overdrive.

Colouring offers a simple way to slow things down. You do need to be purposeful about it, though.

The repetitive motion, gentle focus, and predictability can help the body shift out of stress mode and into a place of calm.

This is why therapeutic colouring can be especially helpful at this time of year.

Here is a page from one of our favourite resources, inspired by a garden rose.

Pause here. Breathe. And colour if you can. Then continue your day a little softer and slower.

You’ll be surprised at how relaxing colouring can be.

How are you planning to decompress over the coming break?

The festive season is a great time for catching up with friends, families and dare I say house work that has been left undone whilst we were at work 🤭.

Somehow though, we came out of the break that comes with the festive season exhausted.

What was meant to be a break turned out to be a race to catch up on everything and everyone we couldn’t whilst we worked throughout the year.

Decompressing is a key part of re-energising ourselves and replenishing our energy.
In other words, catching up with our own ‘self’.

Sadly, that’s one person we often forget!

At VIADCOMS, we believe that intentionally replenishing our energy and spending time on and with our ‘self’ helps attain a higher level of psychological grounding that keeps us functioning well from day to day.

Over the next few days, we will wind 2025 down by talking about decompression tools and techniques you can use to ‘catch up with yourself’ during the break that comes with the festive season.

Although tongue in cheek, this really is a thing to think about when it comes to accessible therapy. Is the cost of therapy driving people to use AI?

Reflections for Employees: Holding Yourself Gently

1. You are not expected to be ‘your usual self:

Grief impacts focus, memory, and emotional regulation. Expecting yourself to function at full capacity can create unnecessary pressure.

Reflection: What small adjustments can I request to help me through each day with compassion for myself? What reasonable adjustments can my employer help me with.

2. It is okay to ask for help:

Many people feel guilty for needing time, flexibility, or emotional space but these needs are valid.

Reflection: Who in my workplace can I speak to who will listen without judgement? Who can help me?

3. Connection can support healing:

You don’t have to share every detail, but letting colleagues know you’re struggling can lighten the emotional load.

Reflection: What do I need from my team right now? privacy, presence, patience, or practical support?

4. Your well-being matters as much as your work:

Take breaks. Breathe. Pause. Grief demands energy, and rest is part of healing.

Reflection: Am I giving myself permission to rest, or am I pushing myself beyond my limits?

We heal best in supportive communities and environments.

When workplaces adopt open, compassionate conversations about bereavement, they reduce isolation for everyone, including those who grieve silently.

Still on yesterday’s topic ‘Reflections for Employers: Building a Compassionate Culture’

3. Policies matter, but empathy matters more:

Bereavement policies provide structure, but kindness is what people remember.

Genuine check-ins, understanding tone, and ongoing support after the initial weeks show employees they are valued beyond productivity.

Reflection: Are our policies designed to support people, or simply to meet compliance requirements?

4. Managers need support too.

Supporting a grieving employee can be emotionally complex.

Managers benefit from guidance, training, and EAP support to respond confidently and compassionately.

Reflection: Do our leaders feel equipped to handle emotional conversations, or do they quietly avoid them? Am I as a leader confident and competent in supporting grieving employees in the work place?

On our next post, we’ll be focusing on reflections for employees. Stay tuned…
