Medic vs Paramedic/Nurse

Why job titles matter on set.

Why This Matters

The term “medic” isn’t protected.

It could mean:

- A registered Paramedic
- A registered Nurse
- An emergency medical technician
- First Responder or first aider
- or someone with no training

Not knowing the difference can put your production at risk.

Key Training Differences:
- Paramedic 3000+ hours
- Nurse 2300+ hours
- EMT 400-1000+ hours
- first responder / first aider - 1-5 days

What “Medic” Doesn’t Tell You:

A hi-vis and a kit bag ≠ a qualified clinician.

Always ask:

- Registration number (HCPC/NMC)
- Training and scope of practice
- Governance and insurance

In an emergency, seconds count.

The wrong “medic” could mean:

No emergency drugs
No emergency interventions
No clinical escalation process
No experience of managing incidents

Your production deserves safe, accountable care.

Silver Screen Medics only provides:

Qualified, registered clinicians
CQC governance
Full clinical oversight

Anaphylaxis is not a drill!

When a set says “No Nut Production” or displays “Severe Allergy in the Building”, it’s not just a courtesy, it’s a life-saving precaution.

Even trace exposure to allergens like nuts, shellfish, or sesame can cause anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is a rapid, life-threatening allergic reaction. Symptoms can start within seconds:
• Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
• Difficulty breathing
• Skin rash or hives
• Vomiting or collapse

Film & TV crews:
• Respect the signs.
• Don’t bring restricted food onto set.
• Always ask before sharing snacks.

Our medics are trained and equipped to respond fast, but prevention is better than emergency care.

It’s not about being dramatic. It’s about not putting someone’s life at risk for a cereal bar.

Hands Matter: 4 Simple Ways to Look After Yours on Set

From rigging to makeup, from SFX to camera, your hands are your most important tools.

They take a beating on set: cuts, chemicals, cold, heat, constant washing…

Here are 4 simple ways to protect them every day:

Moisturise Regularly
Repeated washing dries out your skin. Keep a small, fragrance-free hand cream in your kit.

Wear Gloves When Needed
Handling chemicals, prosthetics, or heavy gear? Protect your skin barrier.

Keep an Eye on Small Cuts
Tiny nicks can become infections fast. Clean, cover, and monitor.

Stretch & Move
Wrist and finger stretches reduce stiffness during long days.

If you notice persistent cracks, numbness, or infections, talk to a medic or see your GP.

Your hands keep the show running, look after them.

5 Common First Aid Mistakes We See on Set

🎬 We’ve seen it all. From paper towels stuffed into wounds to “walking it off” with a sprained ankle…

Here are 5 common first aid mistakes we see on set and why you should avoid them 👇

1️⃣ “I didn’t want to bother anyone.”
☠️ Waiting can make things worse. We’re here for the small stuff too.

2️⃣ Gaffer tape ≠ wound care
🩹 It’s magical… but not sterile. Please come to us for proper dressings.

3️⃣ “I took someone else’s meds.”
💊 This one’s scary. Never share prescription meds, even if it “worked for them.”

4️⃣ Ignoring symptoms because it’s the last day of shoot
🧠 If you’re dizzy, short of breath, or in pain, tell someone. We’d rather miss after work drinks than miss something serious.

5️⃣ Not telling us about pre-existing conditions
🫀 Knowing if you’re epileptic, have anaphylaxis, or prone to fainting helps us help you faster.

📣 The takeaway: First aid isn’t just for emergencies.
It’s about early intervention, reassurance, and keeping you on your feet safely.

We’re not just medics, we’re your care team. 👷‍♂️🎥

🎬✨ Mental health on set isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

Film and TV crews work long hours, move from job to job, and are expected to stay sharp through stress, fatigue, and high pressure. But who looks after them?

🧠 At Silver Screen Medics, we believe mental health support should be a baseline standard on every production, not just something we scramble for when things go wrong.

Here’s what support should look like:
✅ Trained medics experienced in mental health
✅ Quiet spaces to decompress
✅ Post-incident debriefs (emotional + physical)
✅ Normalising check-ins and seeking help

You don’t have to be in crisis to be cared for.
We’re here for all of you, not just the cuts and bruises.

Hydration Hacks (When You’re Too Busy to P*e)

On set? It’s go-go-go. But you still need to drink up.

Here’s how to stay ahead of dehydration:
🥤 Keep 2 water bottles — one chilled, one electrolyte
🚫 Avoid too much caffeine (yes, even at 4am call) and pair each coffee with water
🍉 Snack on hydrating foods like fruit or cucumber
⏰ Set reminders on your phone or watch to remember to drink

🧠 Dehydration = fatigue, headaches, slow reaction time. And no one has time for that.

📌 Save this for your next shoot. Stay sharp. Stay safe.
