The Voice is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Aggrey Burke - the first Black consultant psychiatrist in the NHS. 🙏🏾

During his 40-year-long career he fought tirelessly against discrimination in healthcare - including tackling racism in medical schools and offering psychological support to those traumatised by the New Cross fire in 1981.

Among those paying tribute to Dr. Burke is , his close friend, who said:

"He was not only a friend but also a mentor who challenged psychiatry and the NHS regarding the overrepresentation of Black individuals in the mental health system".

Rest in Eternal Peace Dr. Burke. ❤️🕊️

Deeply grateful to Sharon Prince for this amazing review of "Black Women, Trauma & Therapy", in The British Psychological Society's, The Psychologist.

As a Consultant Clinical & Forensic Psychologist, and the Deputy Director Psychological Professions Leeds & York Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust, her recognition that, "For Black women, therapy is political, and our knowledge, understanding, and interventions must reflect this reality" speaks to the heart of why this book matters.

Thank you, Sharon! Together, we can indeed dream bigger - creating healing spaces where Black women's experiences are truly seen, validated, and honoured.

Next month we publish…

Black Women, Trauma & Therapy: Revolutionising therapeutic thought and practice edited by Helen P. George

The book is a powerful testimony to the growing confidence and reach of Black women’s therapy in the UK today bringing together leading theorists and practitioners to present their radical thinking and innovative work at the cutting edge of intersectionality. Its chapters are hard-hitting, incisive, challenging, shocking, lyrical and inspiring, often all at once.
They cover a vast spectrum of issues impacting on Black women’s mental health and wellbeing amid the ubiquity of racial and gender injustice, attacks and invisibility.
Inspired by the 2022 Community Trauma UK conference ‘Black Women, Trauma and Mental Health’, this book is a revolutionary resource for the counselling, psychotherapy and mental health professions.
