When is it time to consider care? 🫂
Care is rarely about one big moment that occurs. It’s usually lots of small changes that add up over time. There is a common misconception that care can take independence away, where early support can actually help preserve it. There are many signs that could mean a person requires extra support, that can often be overlooked by families. These include:
1) Everyday tasks start to quietly slip - unpaid bills, unopened letters, housework piling up or poor personal hygiene could be a sign of reduced energy or mobility.
2) Unexplained changes in mood or personality - withdrawal from friends and hobbies, increased anxiety or reluctance in leaving the house, and loss of confidence are examples of loneliness and low moods when physical health is left unsupported.
3) Memory issues that affect daily life - missing medication doses, repeatedly asking the same question, confusion with dates/appointments or familiar routes and struggling to follow conversations are not just examples of occasional forgetfulness. Extra support helps maintain routines and reduces stress for everyone.
4) Mobility and safety concerns - unsteady walking or holding onto furniture, difficulty getting in and out of bed, chairs or baths, unexplained bruises, fear of moving around independently. A fall is often the result of a problem and not the beginning.
5) Carer strain in family members - support is for the whole family and not just the person receiving care. Feeling constantly exhausted or overwhelmed, cancelling plans and tension or guilt around caring decisions can be avoided.
6) Increased hospital visits or health scares - repeated GP visits, poor recovery after illness or surgery and managing multiple long-term conditions becomes harder and this can put a lot of strain on families. Early care supports recovery at home.
Care is about helping people live well, in the way that suits them best. Needing care is not a failure! If any of these signs feel familiar, it might be time to explore support options. Feel free to drop us a message and we can discuss the possible help you or your family member may require 💙🧡🤍
