Getting active again after winter

After the colder, darker months, spring is the perfect time to start moving a little more again. The days are lighter, the flowers are blooming, and there’s nothing quite like enjoying the sound of birdsong on a gentle walk.

If you’ve been less active over winter, start small. A short stroll around your local park or neighbourhood can be a wonderful way to ease back into movement. If you pass a local outdoor gym, why not have a go?

Walking regularly helps keep your joints mobile, muscles strong, and balance steady, all of which are important for staying independent and active as we get older.

👣 If foot pain or discomfort is stopping you from enjoying your walks, we’re here to help. Our physiotherapists can assess your mobility, treat any problems, and help keep you moving comfortably this spring.

When physiotherapy happens at home, movement becomes part of everyday life, not just another appointment to fit in. By working in familiar surroundings, we can use your furniture, routines, and real-life goals to guide treatment in a way that feels natural and achievable.

Home physiotherapy is especially valuable for people living with dementia, those undergoing cancer treatment, patients recovering from surgery, and older adults who feel anxious about leaving home.

Being in a familiar environment builds confidence, comfort, and consistency, making progress more sustainable. Gentle, regular movement supports heart health, circulation, balance, and mood.

This may include simple, safe exercises such as:
• Short supported walks
• Sit-to-stand exercises using a chair
• Light stretching to ease stiffness
• Balance work at a stable surface
Small movements, done regularly, can make a big difference.

We’re published a blog to inspire you to add regular gentle movements into your day. Take a read. 👍

Why home physiotherapy works

Recovering shouldn’t feel exhausting before you even begin. Home physiotherapy removes many of the barriers that can slow progress, no travel, no waiting rooms, and no added stress. It’s easier to access, less tiring, and far more comfortable, especially for older adults or those recovering from illness or surgery.

By working in your own home, physiotherapy becomes truly personalised. We use everyday furniture, familiar routines, and movements that matter most to your daily life. Being in a familiar environment boosts confidence, reduces anxiety, and helps people feel more relaxed and engaged in their rehabilitation.

The result? Better follow-through between sessions, steadier progress, and therapy that fits naturally into everyday life, not something extra to cope with.

3 seated healthy heart exercises for you to try at home. Great to whilst your watching tv, or chatting on the phone.

1️⃣ Seated marching
Sit upright in a sturdy chair and slowly lift one knee at a time, as if marching. Keep the movement controlled and breathe steadily. This raises the heart rate gently while strengthening the hips and improving circulation.

2️⃣ Seated arm swings or punches
With feet flat on the floor, swing your arms forward and back or gently punch forward at chest height. This helps increase heart rate, improves upper-body strength, and encourage good posture.

3️⃣ Seated heel & toe taps
Alternate lifting your heels and toes, or gently tap your feet on the floor at a steady pace. This promotes blood flow, supports ankle mobility, and gives the heart a mild workout.

If you’d like some more personalised activities to support your health and mobility, get in touch. My Physio At Home team. Covering South Hertfordshire, Essex and North London.

Love your body

Loving your body doesn’t mean pushing through pain or forcing yourself into exercise that feels overwhelming. For many people, especially older adults, those living with dementia, or individuals undergoing cancer treatment or recovering from surgery, movement should feel kind, safe, and supportive.

Physiotherapy helps the body move better at its own pace. It builds strength, improves balance, reduces stiffness, and restores confidence in everyday activities. Small, gentle movements really do matter - and they add up over time.

This month on our blog, we’re celebrating movement as self-care, not punishment. Take a read for a few gentle exercises to try today.

We’re so lucky to have the most amazing patients, many of whom have taken the time to write such kind reviews on our Google profile. Here are just a few of our short and sweet favourites; they truly mean so much to us.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their experience. We really appreciate your support.
If you haven’t yet written a review and have a spare minute, we’d be incredibly grateful if you could. Google reviews really do help future patients decide whether to book an appointment with us.
