The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a resurgence of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in several countries, including some that had not seen substantial case numbers in recent years.

Key figures (Jan–Sep 2025):

Suspected and confirmed cases: 445,000 globally

Deaths: 1,200

Factors contributing to the resurgence include climate change (expanding the habitats of Aedes mosquitoes) and increased human mobility.

The WHO recommends:

Vector control measures: eliminate mosquito breeding sites, use insecticides

Public health education: raise awareness of prevention

Surveillance: monitor spread and detect outbreaks early

Vaccines available in clinic:

IXCHIQ – live vaccine

Contraindications: do not give if immunocompromised or if patient has received another live vaccine in the past 28 days.

VIMKUNYA – non-live vaccine

Use: suitable for those who cannot receive live vaccines.

Both vaccines are available at £195 per dose.

Please ensure screening for contraindications before vaccination and provide guidance accordingly.
