🍉 My heart breaks a little more with each passing day, but I am not helpless - and neither are you.

🍉 Stop relying on western media outlets for information. Follow verified accounts like .on.palestine . Our sources should rely on lived experience… share them.

🍉 Elevate Palestinian voices. Don’t allow anyone to minimise the experiences of Palestinians through neutralising language. Call it what it is: Genocide. Deliberate Starvation. War crimes.

🍉 Feel your feels. Be shocked. Get angry. Sob with sorrow. Connect with your humanity and collective grief. Don’t let numbness silence your feelings. Come together with loved ones and grieve.

🍉 Sign petitions for ceasefire and to stop arms sales like

🍉 Boycott companies that profit from Apartheid: .movement frequently shares lists. Our voices matter, co-op recently voted to stop trading Israeli products! 👏🏼

🍉 Donate whenever you can : not sure where to start? UNICEF, Islamic Relief UK, PCRF (link in bio).

🍉 Join a protest! 🪧 Central London too overwhelming? Whilst these often have a family friendly route which is a shorter distance and slightly less crowded, there are smaller local demonstrations too.

🍉 And look after yourself. Bearing witness to this genocide is soul wrenching so we need to take care of ourselves and others so we can get back up and fight ✊🏼

🌱 One of the most toxic ideas perpetuated by diet-culture is that our bodies are to blame for our negative body image. When we are stuck in shame and self-blame we can struggle to zoom out.

🌱 Our bodies are not the problem. Body image is how we perceive our bodies, and that is impacted by a myriad of internal and external factors.

🌱 For example, Sometimes we feel full with emotions that we don’t know how to manage or express effectively, so we project that frustration and anger onto our bodies. This helps us go from being helpless with our big feels to feeling empowered that we can do something (via trying to change our bodies).

🌱 Struggles implementing and reinforcing boundaries can also be a trigger for negative body image. Boundaries communicate how we want to be treated, and they help keep us safe so when they’re crossed we (understandably) don’t feel very good in ourselves and our bodies.

🌱 Culturally and politically, when our rights are under threat (like they are now) we feel unsafe and out of control. This can manifest as a steady sense of panic, unease, and bodily discomfort. Maybe the stress makes us experience bloating, sleep disruptions or other physical symptoms that impact how we perceive our bodies.

🌱 So…what do you do with this? Firstly, stop blaming your body when you experience negative body image and get curious about what’s happening inside and around you. We don’t exist outside of our wider social-cultural-political contexts. When we zoom out we can find opportunities to make positive changes in our lives that leave us feeling more empowered — way more so than shrinking our bodies ever will ✌🏼

🍉 It’s no coincidence, and it’s crucial to understand if you truly want to break free from the oppression of diet-culture.

🍉 I’ll leave you with the poignant words of Naomi Wolf: “A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one” - The Beauty Myth

🍃 Challenging an eating disorder can feel scary and overwhelming. You might be filled with thoughts like “I can’t do this” or “I will feel awful if I do this”.

🍃 When this happens, you have a choice in how you perceive those thoughts. You can leave them unchallenged and assume them to be true. Or, you can question them.

🍃 If you question them, critically reflect on WHO is the most afraid about making this change. Ie: who stands to lose the most by making this change.

🍃 Is it the eating disorder - who desperately doesn’t want to let you go? Is it the part of you that is anxious about change, including letting go of the ED? Is it your true self, the part of you that knows that you inherently deserve so much more in life?

🍃 It’s ok if you don’t always make recovery oriented decisions - sometimes we need to make choices that preserve our sense of safety. But you can always, always, aim to reflect critically on the dialogue unfolding in your head ♥️

🍂 Restricting our food intake requires a level of dissociation from our bodies in order to ignore hunger cues.

🍂 Compulsive exercise requires a level of dissociation from our bodies in order to ignore our pain and discomfort.

🍂 Self-loathing and hating our bodies contributes to a level of dissociation from our bodies as we attempt to shame and punish ourselves to shrink.

🍂 Jumping off the diet/wellness bandwagon is HARD, but in doing so you regain more than “just” a more intuitive and compassionate relationship with food. Studies on intuitive eating have shown that those of us that score higher on the IE scale have higher levels of interoceptive awareness — meaning higher levels of embodiment.

🍂 In other words, it makes it easier to identify, understand and regulate emotions as well as tending to bodily needs. Higher levels of interoceptive awareness is also correlated with lower levels of disordered eating, depression, and anxiety.

🍂 Ditching diet-culture brings you back into your body, and that is an act of radical self-care 🤍

(Note: if you’ve experienced trauma it might not feel safe to come back into your body, in which case please seek support from a registered, trauma informed therapist x)

🍂 After a decade of working as an eating disorder therapist, here’s what I’ve learned about how restriction shrinks our lives:

🍂 Worrying about food can cause us to avoid certain social situations, resulting in feelings of loneliness and isolation.

🍂 Cutting out foods or meals can push our bodies’ boundaries to the point of injury and illness.

🍂 When we strive to abide by strict food rules, the food noise in our heads can prevent us from being fully present with our loved ones, our work, our studies, and with ourselves.

🍂 Restricting our food involves a level of dissociation from our bodies in order to ignore our hunger. This can also contribute to emotional dissociation and dysregulation — because, like hunger, emotions originate as sensations in our bodies.

🍂 The more preoccupied we are with food, and trying to control it, the less we are able to engage with our lives in meaningful ways. This is especially true for folks with clinical eating disorders, but I also see it with disordered eating.

🍂 How does restriction shrink your life? 👇🏼

🍁 It’s Canadian Thanksgiving today, and as I prepare our lunch feast I’m thinking about the family I miss back home and all the hilarious and memorable Thanksgiving lunches we have shared over the years. It’s amazing how brussels sprouts with bacon doused in maple syrup can do that to a gal.

🍁 I’m also reflecting on how hard days like today are for anyone still trapped in the diet/wellness culture roundabout. The weeks spent in an anxiety-fuelled state of restriction and frantic exercise in order to “justify” food that isn’t considered “healthy”. The guilt and shame that consumes the mind and disrupts connection with loved ones. The emotional and physical “hangover” that ensues after that accidental binge.

🍁 If this sounds like you, please know it doesn’t always have to be like this. You can get back to a place where food can be enjoyed without fear, anxiety, shame, and compensation. It is possible to spend days like today focusing on family and friends, instead of macros and kcals xx

🌾 It’s and the focus this year is on Mental Health in the workplace. Simone Biles has showed us EXACTLY how to prioritise our mental health in employment through radical self care.

🌾 Radical self-care has nothing to do with running yourself a bath and slapping on a face mask. It’s about deliberately and intentionally pushing back against the status quo in the name of your own wellbeing and the benefiting the collective good.

🌾 Simone showed us exactly how this looks: it starts with recognising when you’re pushing yourself too hard, and taking it as a sign to stop rather than pushing even harder.

🌾 Learning how to say no, and standing by your no in spite of outward pressure and judgement.

🌾 Listening to your body. When you’re sick, tired, overwhelmed, take time off to rest. And actually REST.

🌾 Protecting your mind. When your head isn’t in the game (for whatever reason) give yourself some grace and compassion. Take a step back from whatever you’re doing.

🌾 Building internal boundaries. Learn to tell yourself “I am doing too much” instead of “I am not doing enough”.

🌾 Is this easier said than done? Absolutely. Will you face backlash (either internally or externally)? Probably.

🌾 There’s currently 2 million people on the NHS waiting list for mental health support. Whatever we are doing is NOT working so it’s time to step up and radically change our mindset to mental health — in the workplace and all other facets of our lives x
