Why Is Eating Healthy Important?

A nutritious, well-balanced diet – along with physical activity and refraining from smoking – is the foundation of good health. Healthy eating includes consuming high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, heart-healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and water in the foods you take in while minimizing processed foods, saturated fats and alcohol. Eating in this manner helps you maintain your body’s everyday functions, promotes optimal body weight and can assist in disease prevention.

Overall Health
The nutrients in the foods you eat support the activities of day-to-day living, protect your cells from environmental damage and repair any cellular damage that might occur. Protein rebuilds injured tissue and promotes a healthy immune system. Both carbohydrates and fats fuel your body, while vitamins and minerals function throughout your body in support of your body’s processes. Vitamins A, C and E, for example, act as antioxidants to protect your cells against toxins, and B vitamins help you extract energy from the foods you eat. Calcium and phosphorus keep your bones strong, while sodium and potassium help to transmit nerve signals. Without a healthy diet, you might compromise any of these essential functions.

Weight Control
In addition to the quality of the foods you consume, the quantity matters when considering good eating habits. Taking in the same number of calories as you burn ensures your weight remains steady over time. Consuming more than you burn, on the other hand, results in weight gain as your body converts extra calories to fat tissue. When you accumulate fat tissue, you increase your risk of developing one or more health problems, including heart disease, hypertension, respiratory issues, diabetes and cancer. A healthy meal plan without excess calories helps you not only feel better but can prolong your life.

Disease Prevention
Obesity is not the only nutrition-related cause of disease onset and progression. Too much or too little of certain nutrients can also contribute to health issues. For instance, a lack of calcium in your diet can predispose you to developing osteoporosis, or weakening of your bones, while too much saturated fat can cause cardiovascular disease, and too few fruits and vegetables in your nutrition plan is associated with an increased incidence of cancer. Consuming foods from a wide variety of sources helps ensure your body has the nutrients it needs to avoid these health problems.

Why Carbohydrates Are Important for Your Diet

Carbohydrates are all about energy and are found in foods like fruits, vegetables, breads, pasta, and dairy products.

Your body uses these foods to make glucose, which is your body's main energy source. Glucose is a type of sugar that can be used right away for energy or stored away to be used later.

"Carbohydrates provide the body with the energy it needs and are a good source of many vitamins and minerals. However, not all carbohydrates are created equal," says Donna Logan, RD, a registered dietitian at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.

According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005, the best carbohydrates are those that contain a lot of fiber, like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. These types of carbohydrates take longer to break down into glucose and give you the most nutrients along with your calories. Refined carbohydrates are sometimes referred to as "bad” carbohydrates. These are carbohydrates that have been processed to remove parts of the grain and have had sugar added. Common examples of refined or processed carbohydrates are white bread, cakes, and cookies.

Low-Carb Diets and Weight Loss

"One of the best weight-loss guidelines is to eliminate sources of simple sugars such as soda, sweets, candies, cakes, cookies, and similar snack foods," says Logan. "Choose foods with few or no grams of sugar. Foods high in fiber are best because they provide optimal nutrition while giving a sense of fullness.”

If you choose a low-carbohydrate diet for weight loss and take in fewer calories, you will lose weight. Generally these diets involve eating less bread and pasta and more vegetables, fruits, and meat. Although low-carbohydrate diets work well early on, after six months they do not work any better than any other diets for weight loss.

“If you stop eating carbohydrates, you rapidly lose water weight as your body breaks down the stored carbohydrates," explains Darwin Deen, MD, senior attending physician at Montefiore Medical Center's Department of Family and Social Medicine in the Bronx, New York. "The problem is that a low-carbohydrate diet is not a normal balance of physiologic nutrition. As soon as you start eating carbohydrates again, your body replenishes your carbohydrate stores and your weight comes back," says Dr. Deen.

Eat the Right Carbohydrates for Weight Loss

"Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, which can add variety, color, and flavor to meals. Whole grains such as whole wheat, corn tortillas, and brown rice are great sources of healthy carbohydrates. Check the nutritional label for carbohydrate information, including total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and sugars,” says Logan.

Here are ideas for getting the right carbs in your diet: Start your day with a breakfast of whole-grain cereal and fruit. Add an extra serving of vegetables to lunch and dinner. For easy between-meal snacks right at your fingertips, keep raw, cut-up vegetables in the refrigerator. Substitute beans as a main course in place of meat once every week. Eat a whole fruit as your dessert.

Which are the best oils to consume?

The following six oils are your healthiest options when compared to the dozens of choices you have.

If your cooking involves high heat such as searing or browning, you’ll want to choose between avocado oil or almond oil.

1. Avocado oil

avocado oil bowlPressed directly from avocados, this oil is heart healthy thanks to its richness in monounsaturated fat. Avocado outshines olive oil in the heat department since it has a higher smoke point, making it ideal for a majority of high heat cooking methods.

Avocado oil also has a “buttery neutral flavor that doesn’t interfere with other ingredients,” according to The Telegraph.

2. Almond oil

almond oilAlmond oil was probably not on your list of oils to buy, but it’s certainly worth consideration.

You may have to shell out a bit more cash for this gem, but it will prove to be worth it’s weight in gold. Almond oil’s high amount of monounsaturated fats and low amount of saturated fats make it a healthy alternative.

Cooking with almond oil can improve cardiovascular health and vitamin E levels, which means you’ll be healthy on the inside and look radiant on the outside.

If your menu includes a baked or stir-fry dish, you’ll want to reach for extra virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil. These oils are great for medium to medium/high heat cooking.

3. Extra virgin olive oil

extra virgin olive oilTake it easy with the olive oil since it’s higher in saturated fats in comparison with other oils. We’re not saying to ditch it completely, but just be mindful when using extra virgin olive oil.

After all, the benefits of EVOO are unmatched.

According to Molecular & Cellular Oncology at Taylor & Francis, studies have shown that extra virgin olive oil contains a significant amount of antioxidants that reduce the risk of several cancers.

How is that possible?

Researchers found that extra virgin olive oil prevents cancer cells from rapidly spreading, moving, or invading nearby areas and “induces cell death” in cancerous cells.

As a huge staple in the Mediterranean diet, extra virgin olive oil has been studied as a way to improve cardiovascular health by “preventing conditions related to coronary disease [and] stroke,” according to Medical News Today.

4. Macadamia nut oil

macadamia oilMacadamia nut oil is another uncommon oil that you may not have considered.

Mostly comprised of monounsaturated fats, macadamia nut oil is loaded with the good kind of fat. In fact, macadamia nut oil contains a higher percentage of monounsaturated fat than most other oils and is relatively low in both saturated and polyunsaturated fats.

One of the unexpected benefits I find when consuming macadamia nut oil is noticeably healthy skin and hair, and it doesn’t stop there.

According to a study posted on Livestrong, “Macadamia nut oil contains antioxidants, such as vitamin E and squalene, which protect the skin, hair and cellular structures from the damage caused by free radicals.”

Again, you may need to spend a few more pennies on macadamia nut oil, but the health benefits will surely save you money in the long run.

Next, we have an oil that’s ideal for cooking at low heat temperatures. When sautéing lightly, simmering sauces, or baking food on low, your healthiest option is coconut oil.

5. Coconut 0il

coconut oilCoconut oil has been sparking debates amongst nutritionists for years. Some argue that the high saturated fat levels make it anything but healthy, while others advocate that having high, healthy saturated fats is actually a benefit in and of itself.

Most notably, coconut oil has been credited with increasing HDL, or good cholesterol levels, as well as providing energy for your body. Even though these are some of coconut oil’s greatest selling points, you’ll want to limit your intake of coconut oil since everything is healthiest in moderation.

According to Mercola, the saturated fats in coconut oil:

Promote heart health
Aid weight loss
Support your immune system
Maintain a healthy metabolism
Provide an immediate energy source
Keep skin healthy and youthful looking
Ensure proper functioning of your thyroid gland
The last oil on our list hates heat and should be consumed raw. I’m talking about flaxseed oil.

6. Flaxseed oil

flaxseed oilFlaxseed oil is also marketed under the name linseed oil. Flaxseed oil is popular among vegans who don’t eat fish or take fish oil supplements because flaxseed contains the same omega fatty acids without being an animal byproduct.

As a polyunsaturated fat, flaxseed oil helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and improves menopausal symptoms, according to The Telegraph. Because of these heart healthy benefits, flaxseed oil makes the perfect addition to any pantry.

Although it’s common to see restaurants serving olive oil and vinegar dressings, the best oil for salads and dressings is actually flaxseed oil. Flaxseed oil doesn’t require any heat to taste delicious and its distinctive taste will surely grow on you to become a favorite.

Now that you have a general idea of what healthy oils to buy, you’ll need to know how to store them properly because oils turn rancid easily and that’s definitely unhealthy.

Is desi ghee better than oil?

Vitamins A, D, E, and K present in Ghee are fat-soluble. This means Ghee helps is to absorb these vitamins.

Ghee has MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids ) , which is better than PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) found in oils like corn, sunflower, cottonseeds oils etc. Thus Desi Ghee is a better choice than these oils.

Ghee does not contain lactose, hence it is safe for lactose intolerant people.

Ghee is made up of short chain fatty acids which can be digested easily. This nature also helps to break fat.

Ghee provides lubrication to muscles and joints.

Ghee is free of trans fats unlike other oils.

Ghee is free of salt unlike butter available in market.

Ghee boosts immunity.

Ayurveda recommends Desi Ghee because it is good for whole body.

Ghee can be used for cooking at high temperature unlike Olive Oil. However, a few people believe that Desi Ghee is best consumed when poured on cooked food before consuming. That’s the reason why our grandparents added ghee in daals before eating or poured on rotis !

Why is carbohydrate important everyday?

Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel for your body, making them an important part of your everyday diet. Adequate carbohydrate intake gives you energy for your workout and is essential for normal brain function. Almost all foods provide carbohydrates, with meat, eggs and some types of seafood being the only exceptions.

Immediate Energy

Carbohydrates break down into glucose, their simplest form, and are utilized for immediate energy. Simple carbohydrates are sugars, such as fruit sugar, or fructose; milk sugar, or lactose; and white table sugar, or sucrose. Simple carbs convert directly into glucose in your small intestine and instantly absorb through intestinal walls. Complex carbs are branched starch molecules. Starch takes longer to metabolize in your gut. When you chew, saliva surrounds starch molecules and breaks them down into smaller maltose molecules. Once maltose, a simple carbohydrate, reaches your small intestine, enzymes break it down further into glucose molecules. From there, glucose absorbs directly into your bloodstream. Since simple carbs digest quickly, they cause your blood glucose to quickly spike, whereas starches may take a while longer to affect your glucose levels.

Energy Storage

Your system automatically uses the glucose it needs right away to supply instant energy and then stores the rest as glycogen in your liver and muscles. Glycogen is a complex polysaccharide carbohydrate that quickly converts back to glucose when carbohydrates are not immediately available. Your body stores enough glycogen to sustain about two hours of vigorous exercise, according to The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Carbohydrates in Foods

Most of your daily calories, between 45 and 65 percent, need to come from carbohydrates to provide enough energy to support everyday functions. Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram, so if you normally follow a 2,000-calorie diet, you need 225 to 325 grams of carbohydrates each day. Single servings of grain foods, including one slice of bread, a half-cup of mashed potatoes or one-third cup of pasta, provide 15 grams of carbohydrates, the American Dietetic Association reports. A small 4-ounce piece of fruit also has about 15 grams of carbohydrates, while 1-cup of raw non-starchy vegetables, such as spinach and lettuce, offer less than 5 grams of carbohydrates. Milk and yogurt contribute to your daily carbohydrate requirement, offering around 12 grams per 8-ounce serving.

Why whole wheat is better?

Whole wheat contain all parts of the grain kernel. But refined grains, like the flour used to make white bread, have had the fiber-dense bran and the nutrient-rich germ processed out, leaving only the starchy endosperm. Removing the bran and germ also removes key nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, protein, and fiber.

Some flour and bread manufacturers "enrich" their bread by adding extra vitamins back in. But it's still better to eat whole grains.

If you're buying packaged bread in the supermarket, be sure the label says "whole grain" or "whole wheat."

Benefits of a Gluten Free Diet

For many individuals, the advantages and benefits of a gluten free diet translate to better health. However, people with Celiac disease and/or allergies find the benefits of a gluten free diet to be life sustaining. Gluten free products lack gluten in the protein, which is normally found in wheat and barley, for example. This is why a gluten free diet is closely related to a wheat free diet. Some gluten free ingredients include rice, millet and quinoa. Products made with rice, millet, and quinoa are very popular as substitutes for wheat and barley based products.
