🗓️Managing Black Friday🗓️

Our focus this week at Nurovia has been on ADHD, money management and coping with Black Friday advertising. To finish the week, we wanted to leave you with a few final reminders and ideas to help manage Black Friday!

The most important thing to say, however, is Be Kind to Yourself!! If you have purchased and you’re now asking yourself ‘Why?’ – reflect, allow yourself compassion and think about how you might handle it next time. You’ve got this! 🩷

🗣️Let’s Talk about ADHD and Black Friday Advertising!

Black Friday can be really challenging for ADHD brains – the adverts give a sense of urgency, make us feel like we are missing out and increase the pressure to buy!

👇Below are some hints and tips to help you decide whether to spend or save on Black Friday

▪️Ask yourself if it is a brand you would usually buy from – If not, do your research, are they reputable? Do they have good reviews?

▪️Would you bought the product if it wasn’t in the Black Friday Sale?

▪️Do you need it? Do you even want it?

▪️Talk the pros and cons of buying the product through with a trusted friend or partner

▪️Avoid or limit the use of Buy Now Pay Later sites

▪️Try not saving your card details to websites – manually making payment adds a step and can increase mindfulness about what you are buying

▪️If you do think you have a good deal – check whether you can afford it and research whether you are getting the best deal

💷ADHD and Impulse Buying💷

🗓It is that time of year where there seems to be a constant stream of sales, promotions, adverts - If you have ADHD, it can feel really challenging to pass these by and not make an impulse purchase.

📲Adverts and promotions speak to the impulsive side of ADHD, making it extremely hard to resist buying something, even if you had no intention of doing so!

💳The feeling that you might miss out or not get the best deal drives the need to buy further – it feels good to get something new, or have the excitement of a package landing on your doorstep but when these deals are combined with credit options or 'Buy Now Pay Later' it can lead to feelings of regret later down the line.

💭As the sales ramp up, pause and think if you really need that item, would you have bought it without the advert? Will you remember to return it if it isn’t right?

Share the ideas that help you avoid impulse buying below 👇

Neuro-affirming means validating neurodivergent ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting. It means accepting a neurodivergent person’s experience of the world and not attempting to change people to fit a neurotypical way of being.
Neuro-affirming language respects identity, reduces stigma, and fosters inclusion.

❌ Not Neuro-Affirming:
“Disorder” or “Afflicted”
“Suffering from…”
“Normal vs abnormal”
✅ Neuro-Affirming:
“Neurodivergent”
“Autistic person” “Different ways of thinking”
