It is devastating to hear that Alex Savage is no longer with us. Alex was much loved by the BCJ team.
Throughout his time battling cancer, he campaigned for brain cancer patients. Alex used his determination and endless energy to raise awareness, even when his own body was battling the brutal treatment.
He lived for nearly 5 years post diagnosis. During that period he underwent three brain surgeries after two recurrences, multiple rounds of chemo before losing movement in his left arm. He continued to have ongoing treatment including fortnightly infusions and drugs. At no point did he give up fighting his tumour.
Alex was a much loved husband and a devoted father. We are very much thinking of you Anna, Etta, and Alex’s family.
To the end Alex remained active, he attended the Brain Cancer Justice event on 9th March as we delivered out petition to No.10 Downing Street. Later that evening he shared more of his story, his fight and his desire for change. In first pic he is standing with GBM patients (L to R): Chris – who is currently in Cologne receiving treatment, Georgie, co-founder of BCJ and Alex.
In February, he had been talking with Sam Suri (in pics 2&3) on the Tessa Jowell Foundation podcast: https://youtu.be/Qaxrw8J1GYI?si=z8b54OZwy7Nx5Ujj
Sam describes Alex as “a beautiful human being, so honest, kind, an amazing dude”. It was a truly impactful podcast with both of them detailing their own experience facing brain cancer. They spoke bluntly about the daily, ongoing challenges facing patients, including the financial impact, and the heart breaking truth of what they can no longer do in life.
Even if you only have a short amount of time – listen to this podcast. Alex shares the value of appreciating the smaller things in life, sunrise, favourite cup of coffee, seeing the ducklings swimming “more present and more attuned. Keep grinding on. Day by day, one foot in front of another.”
Current patients will strongly relate to their experience, whilst patient families will benefit from understanding how patients are guiding their way through the process. This is incredibly valuable.
Alex is an inspiration to us all, he fought throughout his illness, rising to every new challenges. He’s inspired BCJ to keep going.
Alex’s decline was both quick and confronting.
Unfortunately the Government’s action is the exact opposite.
This NEEDS to CHANGE.
RIP Alex Savage
