One of the biggest misconceptions is that fertility challenges are mostly a female issue. In truth, male fertility is complex, multi-layered, and requires specialist input.
We caught up with Mr James Nicopoullos, Medical Director and Consultant Gynaecologist at The Lister Fertility Clinic who shared more about male fertility.
“Involving the right experts is crucial. At our clinics, any male-factor concern is reviewed with our world-leading fertility urologists, ensuring every man gets a full, expert assessment.
To support this, we hold multidisciplinary meetings, bringing together gynaecologists and specialist urologists to discuss complex cases and tailor the best possible treatment plans. This collaborative approach ensures nothing is missed and every couple receives the most comprehensive care.
Smoking can significantly reduce s***m number, quality, and even genetic integrity. Alcohol in moderation is less impactful, but excessive intake can still affect health. Healthy diet, exercise, and maintaining a good BMI all support better s***m function. Small lifestyle tweaks can make a meaningful difference, especially when combined with the right medical support.”
In contrast to egg production, s***m production continues through a man’s life and is not significantly impacted on until late in life. However there is some data suggesting that DNA damage in s***m does increase slightly with age, so we often recommend more detailed s***m DNA testing as part of early investigation.
Most of the time there are no symptom associated with fertility problem or a low s***m count, but any pain, lumps or new symptoms should warrant a medical review to look for anything such as an infection or varicocele that may include impact on fertility.
The first and most important step is proper diagnosis. This goes beyond a standard semen analysis and can include detailed s***m DNA fragmentation testing, scans, blood tests, genetic testing and hormone profiles.
If you’d like clarity about your own reproductive health, do get in touch, we are here to support you every step of the way.”
