Meet one of our forward-thinking speakers, Ana Rosa de Lima. Ana is Founder of Meli Bees Network. Initiator of socio-environmental projects, Ana Rosa grew up in Marabá-PA, a city in the Amazonian Arc-of-Deforestation. As a witness of the destruction of the forest, she also saw how land conflicts were at the core of the problem and how the environmental and social issues need to be addressed together. She has lived in Germany since 2016, where she worked in Duisburg-Essen University and started the podcast Apenã (in Portuguese). In the same country, in 2020, she started the non-profit organization Meli Bees Network gUG. The organization connects the Amazonian reality to an international environment and strengthens the Amazonian communities so that they can protect and regenerate vulnerable areas of the Amazon, always inspired on the local native bees.

Join us this Earth Day 2022, as we are joined by forward-thinking experts to uncover emerging technologies, start-ups, and technological solutions that are tackling the climate crisis for a green future.

Join us for our next SODA Social networking initiative taking place, hosted by our very own Ben Prince. The virtual event is titled 'Reopening the Workplace: Adjusting to the new normal in Ireland', after the opening of Ireland' on the 9th of December.

The pandemic has changed the work environment forever. Shifting mindsets and adapting to a working remotely and in-office hybrid work model has become the norm. Companies like Netflix, Twitter, Dropbox, and Slack have even enabled their employees to work from home permanently. There has been a recent surge in resignations according to the Irish Times (2021), moreover, the Irish market is a noticeably buoyant market with more opportunities than ever to satisfy a growing talent pool.

Join us as we discuss with market-leading experts, business leaders, and employees about the best strategies and techniques, organisations can be adhering to, to ensure employees feel stress-free, supported, and comfortable on returning to the workplace in the new normal.

Yesterday evening, we hosted our SODA Social webinar, ‘Building an Accessible Workplace,’ in collaboration with the wonderful team at Code Institute. We discussed solutions to help create a disability-friendly and accessible workplace that works for everyone.

We focussed on the physical and social barriers that are often put in place for disabled people. Brian O’Grady, program director at Code Institute, explained the impact of working from home for people with physical barriers. He illustrated the while the shift to remote working has been universally accepted, it is imperative to still consider the needs of people working from home with a disability. Jessy Halison, Engineering Manager at Ecosia, also added that social barriers can play a part in inequality in the tech space. 80% of the tech population have a degree, this contrasts with 18% for non-visible people and only 6% for visible people. Jessy advised that we must address this indifference to drive diversity and inclusion.

Another pivotal topic of conversation was building empathy for disabled people through recruiting and hiring. Toby Mildon, diversity, and inclusion architect at Mildon advised our audience to map out the recruitment process from beginning to end, then understand what it is like to go through the process with various impairments, identifying speedbumps or roadblocks which may slow people down. Steve Demeter, Senior Engineering Manager at Google impactfully spoke about considering hidden challenges for individuals, explaining how mentally draining it can be to over-explain your disability to others to achieve some form of acceptance.

From all at SODA Social, we would like to thank our panellists for their insights, and to Code Institute for their instrumental collaboration from start to end. If you missed the webinar, catch up on the video footage below: https://buff.ly/3yZ6PGz
