Dry Lips: What They Can Mean and What To Do

Dry lips are very common, but sometimes they can be a sign that your body needs attention. In many cases, dry lips happen because of dehydration. When you do not drink enough water, your lips can lose moisture and become dry or cracked.

Environmental factors such as cold weather, dry air, or too much sun exposure can also cause dry lips. In addition, frequent lip licking can make dryness worse because saliva removes natural oils from the lips. Some medications and vitamin deficiencies may also contribute to dry lips.

To help prevent dry lips, drink enough water throughout the day and use a good lip moisturizer or lip balm. Try to avoid licking your lips often, and protect your lips from harsh weather when possible.

However, if dry lips are severe, painful, bleeding, or not improving despite good care, it is important to seek medical advice. Persistent dryness may sometimes indicate an underlying health issue that needs attention.

Taking simple daily care of your body, including staying hydrated and maintaining good nutrition, helps keep your lips and overall health in good condition.

What do you know about Fibroids?

I want to talk briefly about uterine fibroids, a very common women’s health condition.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb. Many women have fibroids and don’t even know, because sometimes they cause no symptoms at all.

However, for some women, fibroids can cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, painful periods, lower abdominal pain, frequent urination, or difficulty getting pregnant. Heavy bleeding can also lead to anaemia, which may cause tiredness and weakness.

Fibroids are more common in women between 30 and 50 years, especially women of African descent, and those with a family history.

Not all fibroids need treatment. Management depends on the symptoms, size, and a woman’s future pregnancy plans. Treatment may include observation, medication, or surgery.

The key message is this: if your periods are very heavy, painful, or different from your normal, please seek medical advice early. Fibroids are common, manageable, and early care makes a big difference.

🤔 Did You Know Your Kidneys Are the Body’s Silent Superheroes?

Most of us don't think about our kidneys until something goes wrong, but these two fist-sized organs are absolute powerhouses. They do so much more than just make urine; they are the master chemists of your entire body. Here is what’s happening behind the scenes:

• The Ultimate Filtration System: Every single day, your kidneys filter about 120 to 150 quarts of blood. Your entire blood supply is scrubbed clean of toxins and waste dozens of times a day.
• The "Silent" Warning: Kidney disease is often called a "silent killer" because you might not feel a thing until your kidney function is down to 15% or less. This is why knowing the subtle signs is so vital.
• Heart Connection: Your heart and kidneys work together. The kidneys receive about 20-25% of the blood pumped by every heartbeat. This is why high blood pressure is so dangerous, it eventually scars the delicate filters in the kidneys.

❌ Subtle Signs You Should Never Ignore.

Because the kidneys are so efficient, they try to compensate when they’re struggling. Here is what that looks like and why it happens:
• Puffiness Around the Eyes: If you wake up with "bags" that don't go away, it could be because your kidneys are accidentally leaking protein into your urine instead of keeping it in your blood.
• Swollen Ankles and Feet: When the kidneys can't filter properly, your body starts to retain sodium. This leads to fluid buildup in your lower extremities.
• Feeling Constantly Exhausted: Healthy kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO), which tells your body to make red blood cells. When kidneys struggle, you have fewer red blood cells to carry oxygen, leaving you feeling wiped out.
• Foamy or Bubbly Urine: If your urine looks like the foam on top of a latte or scrambled eggs, it’s a major red flag. It means there is a high amount of protein escaping the "filters."
• Persistent Itchy Skin: This isn't just "dry skin." It happens because the kidneys can no longer keep the right balance of minerals and nutrients in your blood, leading to a buildup of waste that makes your skin react.

The Takeaway: If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, you are at the highest risk. Don't wait for symptoms to show up, ask your doctor for a simple blood and urine test. Catching it early makes all the difference!
