Please join us in marking World Health Day today.
The BOA supports this year’s theme — ‘Together for health. Stand with science.’ — which calls on governments, scientists, health workers, partners and the public to work together to protect lives, rebuild trust, and secure a healthier future through scientific collaboration.
MSK health underpins many aspects of overall health and wellbeing. Improving MSK health can transform lives, not only for patients but also for those who care for them.

Ever wondered how a single surgical mishap can ripple far beyond the patient? In Beyond the Primary Victim, Tahir Khan and Taimoor Khan explore how an unintended adverse event can create a domino effect, causing psychological and moral injury not just to the patient, but also to the surgeon and even to future patients — the so-called primary, second, and third victims.

It’s a fascinating look at the wider impact of surgical errors and why understanding these dynamics is crucial for patient care, team wellbeing, and professional resilience.

Our Story

Our mission is to advance for the public benefit the practice, art and science of orthopaedic surgery. To do this we have designed a strategy focused on our core objectives of excellence in professional practice, training and education, and research. For each core objective we are currently developing a five year plan that sets out short, medium and long term deliverables. We review progress in each area periodically throughout the year, culminating with an annual report to Council. Because of the pace of change across the health care system we keep that report light on words and long on substance in the form of a presentation: effectively it becomes a decision support tool to inform future priorities across our three core objectives.
