The harder we try not to think about something, the more it keeps coming back.

This is a common overthinking loop.
Trying to force thoughts away often keeps them active.

A more helpful shift is to recognise the pattern and change how we respond when the thoughts keep coming back.

Overthinking often feels like trying to get certainty before you can relax.

But the more we chase certainty, the more stuck the mind can feel.

Here are a few gentle prompts to help you notice when thinking has shifted into overthinking.

Sometimes the most difficult thing about overthinking is that it can feel like problem-solving.

These questions are simply a way to pause and notice when the mind might be circling the same ground.

Recognising the pattern is often where change begins.

Overthinking rarely begins with the intention to overthink. It often starts with a single thought the mind keeps trying to resolve.

I wrote more about recognising this pattern in my latest blog.

Anxiety can feel urgent and convincing, but urgency doesn’t always mean danger.
When we react to every anxious alarm, we may get short relief while keeping the cycle active.
Pause… notice… stay with the discomfort.
That’s how habituation begins: anxiety rises and falls without running your day.

Anxiety doesn’t always look dramatic.

Sometimes people seem completely fine on the outside — working, coping, getting through life — while feeling constantly on alert inside.

For many, anxiety shows up quietly: overthinking, mental tension, difficulty switching off, and feeling mentally stretched even when everything looks ok.

If this resonates, I hope it offers a useful way of understanding what you may be experiencing.

Sleep can feel harder when we follow advice that sounds sensible but creates more pressure.
A gentler approach often helps more than trying to force sleep.

Why does bedtime turn into a full board meeting in your head?
If your mind suddenly gets busy the minute your head hits the pillow, you’re not alone. It’s incredibly common-especially when you spend the day holding everything together.
You’re tired but your brain is in ‘one more thing…’ mode.
The good news? This pattern can be softened.

You can look like you’re coping and still feel mentally exhausted underneath.

For many people, this is not weakness - it’s prolonged mental load and a mind that hasn’t had space to switch off.

Common signs include feeling tired but wired, overthinking, and struggling to rest properly.

Understanding the pattern is often the first step towards change.
