Having benefitted from the spiritual and physical teachings and practices of yoga, which enormously supported my recovery from mental illness, I decided to train as a yoga teacher.
I already had extensive experience as an exercise to music teacher and choir leader but found the two year training course, with Simon Low at the Yoga Academy, incredibly influential. It not only deepened my skills as a movement educator but gave me deeper insights into anatomy and physiology, the nervous system, the fluid body, posture and joint care.
Today, I am a fully accredited and insured yoga and somatic movement educator registered with the British Wheel of Yoga, Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Professionals. I keep my DBS and First Aid Certificates up-to-date and have also trained to accredited certificate level in counselling, communication skills and psycho-dynamic psychotherapy.
Most recently I have qualified as a Somatic Movement Teacher with Lisa Peterson at White Horse Yoga in Devizes and have continued my professional development with Simon Low other teachers including Donna Fahri.
As part of my recovery from mental illness I also researched and published The Little Book of the Mind; an accessible and easy to read book that unpacks and demystifies the medical language of mental health. It was also an attempt to de-stigmatize mental illness.
We really can’t control what happens to us in life but we can make some attempt to control how we deal with things.
However trite it may sound, my life has taught me that in every painful experience, problem or challenge we face there is always a gift and a valuable lesson.
Yoga helps us to find those gifts and develop wisdom.
As we learn how to harness the unhelpful narrations and programmes of the mind, we can transcend past patterns; replacing old behaviours, habits and fantasies with acceptance, peace and harmony. Just like life, it’s an on going process, one that yoga enormously supports.
