Oncology massage should not be rushed; actually, you could say that for most massages! We need to spend time listening to what we are feeling. The tissue has an amazing ability to give us valuable information if we spend time listening with our hands.
Everyone’s experience of cancer is different, and the way that each person responds to cancer treatment will be unique; hence it is important we approach each situation with a willingness to listen.
Any job working with oncology patients is a position of immense responsibility, so you owe it to them to take as much care as you possibly can. While I know it can be tempting to see someone suffering and want to jump straight in and help them, we need to be sure of what we’re doing. That means taking the time to listen to what they’re saying, how they’re feeling both in their body and mind, and creating a treatment approach that you’re absolutely sure isn’t going to harm them in any way but responds to their needs.
If you’re interested in working with oncology patients, you can find everything you need to know in my accredited Oncology Massage Workshop. This course focuses on developing your understanding of common conditions of cancer and how this will influence your work as an oncology massage therapist. It includes how to modify your massage techniques along with learning some new ones specific to a variety of cancer conditions.
