Lifting weights is so important for numerous things including bone health.
The resistance from weight lifting helps bones grow stronger, which is especially important for women who are more likely to develop osteoporosis.
Apart from walking my dog I only do one session of weights a week. This is below the recommended amount of exercise a week, but it's better than nothing. Do what you can 😊
Strength training can reduce your risk of injuries and limit recovery time if you do get injured. Stretching is great, but so are weights!

Karen
Age: 39
Hobbies: Hiking / Nature / Macro Photography and yoga.

Why do you have soft tissue/sports massage treatments?

I have sports massage as part of a management plan to manage chronic pain from fibromyalgia. I get muscle armouring & it helps ease this.

What techniques do you think are most effective during the treatments and how do you think it helps you?

Myofacial release is the most effective, my muscles get really tight and this can cause stiffness & numbness in my arms and legs. The treatment helps alleviate this.

Do you do anything else to compliment your massage treatments?

Yes I do yoga, gentle exercise & lots of walking. I also do other practices to help calm my nervous system to relax the muscles such as EFT tapping, meditation etc. Emotional freedom technique (EFT), is a therapy for anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and some other conditions.
The theory is tapping on different parts of the body helps balance energy and reduce physical and emotional pain.

I see quite a few people who suffer from fibromyalgia. It can be very debilitating. What advice would you give to anyone who is suffering from it?

My understanding of it, is it is caused by living in fight and flight for too long until your nervous system is overwhelmed & the symptoms are a physical manifestation of this. You can’t think your way out of it, your have to address it at its core I.e your hyperactive nervous system. Therefore it is very stress sensitive. Doing small things every day to help calm your nervous system will help.

Thanks Karen that's very interesting!

Harry and Pam

Age: 90 / 88

Harry and Pam are brilliant. They have been coming to see me for nearly 2 years now. Their daughter has also frequented the greatest treatment room in Craven Arms and suggested to them that they come too for their various aches and pains. Thus proving very much that sports massage is for everyone whatever your age.

Harry and Pam have been married for 63 years and have always lived in the area. They met at a village hall dance and the rest is history.

Pam: having suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for at least 20 years Pam has a high pain threshold and often tells me to "get at it" if she thinks I am being too gentle. She fell over trying to pick up a lamb and fractured 2 vertebrae in the last year, this has since healed but she has associated pain through weakened muscles and postural issues. I have given her exercises that she can do from her chair which Harry says she never does 🀣 She also has pain in her shoulder which has been on going, although it never goes away completely we manage it through massage.

Harry: Having worked as a haulage contractor and also having a small holding, Harry has always been busy and active. His knee unfortunately is his main problem area. We have been working on to increase range of movement and decrease pain. Harry says that sports massage makes him more comfortable and feels good.

I asked them what advice they would give the younger generation and they replied, "work hard, keep exercising and keep busy."

I love treating these two. Thank you both. 😊

Keaton
Sport: Rally Co-Driver

Age: 26

What does this entail?

Myself and my driver do a recce of the course and I make pace notes so that I can relay them to him during the race. We get 2 opportunities to complete the stages although we are not allowed to drive over 55mph. Then during the race I have to relay this information to the driver whilst travelling at speeds of around 100mph. Every driver is different and wants the information at different times but usually it can be 2 or 3 corners ahead.

How did you get into rallying?

My family were interested and I grew up around it. I think I went to my first one when I was about 2.

What do you have to wear for a race?

Everything is fireproof from underwear to shoes. I don't wear gloves but have a neck brace with comes down from my helmet and stops my neck over extending.

Have you had any major injuries?

No nothing major but most co drivers get sore necks from the constant movement, acceleration and braking that occurs during a race. We cover a lot of miles and races can be done over 3 days so by the end your body is knackered.

How do you find sports massage helps?

I suffer with neck, shoulder pain (which is pretty much caused by whiplash) and sometimes lower back pain. I need to be as focused as possible during a rally and so I don't want any stiffness or pain in my body and muscles. I am fairly new to the treatments but I have already noticed the benefits.

Thanks Keaton. When I first saw this video of your car gently gliding along next to a precipice it reminded me of myself doing the school run. I think you are brilliant πŸ‘

Ray Rowson
Age: 32
Sport: Motocross

What age did you get into motocross and how did you get into it?

I started riding small bikes when I was about 6 in the fields where I lived. I got into it through my Dad as I thought I can't be any worse at it than he is 🀣

What is your biggest achievement within the sport?

Scoring points at the world championships at Malory Park when I was 17.

At the peak of your career how often did you train and what did it entail?

I rode the bike most days around the country. I didn't have a coach just my Dad and a mechanic. I went to the gym twice a week and worked on core and shoulders mostly. I also did circuits to maintain fitness.

What is the worst injury you have sustained?

I broke one of my vertebra coming off my bike at Hawkston Park in 2008. I went to hospital and they discharged me with internal bruising and a cracked rib. I went back to the doctor later and they scanned me. They called me later to say don't do too much as if you fall over or something you could end up in a wheelchair. 1 year later I broke the vertebra above it! I have broken both ankles, my tibia and fibula. I have broken both wrists (luckily at different times 🀣) cracked a rib, broken my collar bone and smashed my patella in the knee.

Why do you have soft tissue therapy and sports massage and what do you like about it?

Due to a horrendous amount of injuries I have received I will never be 100% and my range of movement in my neck and shoulders are limited. However having treatments with you enables me to increase range of movement, decrease pain and I generally function better. I have a manual job and I feel I can keep going for longer pain free. Plus when I come off my bike sports massage helps me recover quicker.

Chocolate or cheese?

It would have to be chocolate as if I eat cheese my eyes go puffy and they start sweating.

🀣🀣🀣 thanks Ray! There were so many brilliant photos of you but I think this one is epic.

Louise

Age: 55

Sport/Interest:
Horse riding, specialising in dressage now.

How long have you been riding and what first attracted you to it?
I've been riding on and off for about 45 years. While in a pony-mad phase, I was lucky enough to meet someone who let me ride her horses in exchange for helping with the stable work. I've always loved spending time with horses as much as riding them.

How often do you ride/have lessons/compete?
I ride 7 times a week usually. I am hoping to start competing later this year. At the moment, I am still trying to learn how to be a dressage rider.

What injuries/niggles/pain do you present with and how does it effect your riding?
An ankle I damaged in a fall about 10 years ago does not flex well, which affects the whole of that leg and my hips, and therefore how balanced I can be in the saddle, which is a significant hindrance to achieving the precision needed for dressage.

What do you like about soft tissue therapy/sports massage and how does it benefit you?
I simply could not have progressed my riding as much as I have without the massage. My ankle, leg and hips have become much more cooperative. The benefit of the massage lasts well beyond the individual sessions as it lets me use my body better and so start to change the muscle memory.

If horses didn't exist what would take up your time instead?
Marches Grow Local, which is trying to promote local food, and Read Easy, which helps adults who have reading difficulties. And I am hoping to be trained to be an advisor for Citizens Advice. And the garden. Friends, family. Trees.

Thanks Louise.
(I will update photo to an actual photo of Louise when I get it!!)
