Our amazing Optical Assistant Angie is fundraising to travel to Nepal with Ludlow College to help support struggling villages and local communities 🙏✨

To support her, our team is taking on a HUGE challenge — walking 150 miles in just one week! 👟🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ This will all be completed outside of work hours, and we’d love your support 💪

✨️Charity Update ✨️

As some of you may have seen, we recently hosted a fundraising event at our store a few weeks ago.
Several members of our staff participated in a cycling challenge 🚴‍♀️ endeavoring to cover as many miles as possible within an 8-hour period, all in support of Asthma & Lung UK.

This particular charity was selected by our clinical technician, Kalyn. Kalyn shared her personal connection to the cause, stating, "The Asthma & Lung UK charity holds significant importance for me as I received an asthma diagnosis 8 years ago, along with a lung condition known as Bronchiectasis. Having never experienced asthma as a child, I was somewhat unaware that it could manifest suddenly in adulthood. These are chronic lung conditions that I now manage, and they can impact my daily life." ❤️

Collectively, our staff members cycled an impressive 177km on a static bike within 8 hours, all while fulfilling their work responsibilities. 😱

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our staff and the generous contributions from the local community, we successfully raised £267.33!👏🏼

Wise Wednesday 🥰

OCT (optical coherence Tomography) 👁️‍🗨️

When you come into the store or book an appointment you may hear us offer you a £5 retinal scan or OCT scan.....what is this?

Think of an OCT scan as an ultrasound for your eye. While a standard camera captures an image of the surface of the retina an OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan allows us to visualise all 10 of the underlying retinal layers. This advanced imaging technique can help detect eye conditions up to 4 years earlier than traditional tests.

We recommend this to all who visit our store, as do consultants at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

“I recommend everyone has an OCT scan every time they visit their optician, even if they have to pay a bit extra for it, and I actively tell all my patients that when I see them in the eye hospital. It’s the only way to accurately assess what is really going on within the retina, even if the patient has no symptoms. Not only does it pick things up which can be easily missed without it, but it also reduces unnecessary journeys to the hospital which are much more time consuming and expensive for the patient than having the OCT scan done when they visit their optician. There is no reason why everyone shouldn’t have the OCT scan done at every visit to their optician to ensure they are receiving the very best possible eyecare within their own community” - Mrs Matthews, Consultant Ophthalmologist, RSH

Meet The Team 👭

Next up in meet the team we are thrilled to feature the one and only Sophie Wragg! ✨

Sophie’s journey with us began in 2015 during a summer placement while studying Optometry at Cardiff University. After graduating in 2016, she chose to complete her Pre-registration year with us, officially qualifying as an Optometrist in 2017. 👁️‍🗨️

Through her dedication to building meaningful connections and her natural leadership in supporting our team, Sophie rose through the ranks to become a Store Director in 2022. 🎊

Today, she continues to be a cornerstone of our practice, supporting both our patients and staff daily.🥰

Never one to stand still, Sophie is currently training to become an Independent Prescriber. Once completed, this qualification will allow her to personally manage and prescribe pharmaceutical treatments for various eye conditions, providing our patients with even more personalised care.😎

Beyond the clinic, Sophie is a prominent figure in the local optical community. She serves as the Vice Chair of the Shropshire LOC (Local Optical Committee), where she collaborates with fellow opticians across the county and liaises with NHS England matters they feel passionately about! 💪🏻

We couldn't be luckier to have her with us and will continue to watch her glow!! 🌟

Wise Wednesday 😎

Some of our more eagle-eyed followers may have noticed we’ve been busy raising funds for Asthma + Lung UK.
To keep that momentum going, we wanted to highlight a connection many people miss: the link between your respiratory health and your vision. Here is why your lungs and your eyes are more "linked" than you might think:

👁️ The Dry Eye Connection: Those living with asthma are more prone to Dry Eye Syndrome. This often worsens during the winter chill, leading to redness, itching, and blurred vision. Why? Chronic inflammation and certain asthma medications can inadvertently reduce your natural tear production.

👁️ Steroids: While essential for managing asthma, long-term use of steroids is associated with the development of Cataracts.

👁️ Reduced Oxygen: Very severe Asthma can cause low blood oxygen which can affect the cornea.

A massive well done for getting stuck in and participating in our events & ideas 💡🤣

He has brought our total to 130km
Thats the same distance if you were to go from Ludlow's town to Cardiff ! Where many of our opticians graduated from University 👩🏻‍🎓👨‍🎓

Back on again minus the dinosaur costume is Julia! For the 2nd time today, she completed an extra 24km on her own 👏🏼 bringing the total now to 113km 😱

We've nearly cycled the distance from ludlow to the malvern hills ⛰️
