🏃‍♂️ Marathon Season is Coming… Are You Ready? 🏁

Training for a marathon isn’t just about logging miles, it’s about training smart so your body can go the distance.

At our physiotherapy clinic, we help runners stay strong, injury-free, and race-day ready 💪

🔥 Top Tips for Marathon Prep:

✅ Build gradually – Increase mileage step by step to avoid overload
✅ Strength matters – Strong glutes, core & legs = better performance and fewer injuries
✅ Listen to your body – Niggles are early warning signs, not something to ignore
✅ Prioritise recovery – Rest days, mobility work, and proper sleep are just as important as training
✅ Get expert support – A physio can assess your movement, prevent injuries, and optimise performance

🚨 Common runner injuries we see:
• Shin splints
• Runner’s knee
• Achilles pain
• IT band syndrome

The good news? Most of these are preventable with the right guidance.

🎯 Whether it’s your first marathon or you’re chasing a PB, we’re here to support every step of your journey.

Ever “rolled” your ankle and thought, it’s just a minor sprain? 🤔
Think again, ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries we see, and without the right care, they can lead to long-term instability, weakness, and repeated injuries.

👣 What actually happens in an ankle sprain?
When your ankle twists beyond its normal range, the ligaments (the strong bands supporting your joint) can stretch or tear. This can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking.

⚠️ Why proper rehab matters
Many people rest for a few days and return to activity too soon. But skipping rehabilitation can mean:

Ongoing pain or stiffness
Poor balance and coordination
Higher risk of re-injury

💪 How physiotherapy helps
Our tailored rehab programs focus on:

Reducing pain and swelling
Restoring movement and strength
Improving balance and stability
Getting you safely back to sport or daily life

✅ Quick tip: If your ankle is still swollen, painful, or unstable after a few days, it’s time to get it checked.

Don’t let a “simple” sprain turn into a long-term problem, your recovery starts with the right care.

📩 Book an appointment today and take the first step back to pain-free movement! Book online at www.activetherapyclinic.co.uk now.

🦵 Struggling with Knee Pain? It Could Be Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain, especially as we get older or after previous injuries. But the good news? You don’t have to just “put up with it.”

💡 What is it?
Osteoarthritis happens when the protective cartilage in your knee gradually wears down, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement.

⚠️ Common symptoms:
• Aching or stiffness (especially in the morning or after rest)
• Pain when walking, climbing stairs, or standing up
• Swelling around the knee
• Clicking or grinding sensations

💪 How physiotherapy can help:
✔️ Strengthen the muscles supporting your knee
✔️ Improve mobility and flexibility
✔️ Reduce pain and inflammation
✔️ Help you stay active and independent

The right treatment plan can make a huge difference, whether your goal is walking pain-free, returning to exercise, or simply moving more comfortably day to day.

📅 Don’t wait for it to get worse

🎾 Tennis Elbow: More Than Just a Tennis Problem! 💪

Did you know tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) isn’t exclusive to athletes? It happens when the tendons on the outside of your elbow get overworked, think repetitive motions like typing, lifting, or even cooking!

Symptoms to watch for:

Pain or burning on the outer elbow

Weak grip strength

Discomfort when shaking hands or lifting objects

Quick tips for relief:
✅ Rest & avoid repetitive motions
✅ Ice the area 15–20 mins at a time
✅ Gentle stretching & strengthening exercises
✅ Consider a supportive brace

Most cases improve with consistent care, but if pain persists, it’s best to consult a professional.

💡 Pro Tip: Prevention is key! Strengthen your forearms, take breaks from repetitive tasks, and use proper ergonomics.

FAQ Friday: Can physiotherapy help with headaches?

Yes, in many cases, it can.

A lot of headaches actually come from tension and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back (often called tension-type or cervicogenic headaches). Things like long hours at a desk, poor posture, stress, or muscle tightness can all play a role.

Physiotherapy focuses on identifying and treating the root cause of your headaches, not just the symptoms. Treatment may include:
💆‍♀️ Hands-on therapy to reduce muscle tension
🧘 Exercises to improve mobility and posture
💡 Advice to help prevent headaches returning

If your headaches are linked to muscle or joint issues, physio can be a really effective way to reduce frequency and intensity, and help you feel more in control.

Send us a message and we can book you in with an expert physio who can treat headaches.
