Are you sufferer of Chronic Fatigue / ME post -viral Syndrome or Long Covid. (CFS / ME / PVS & LC) This collective set of conditions are extremely common and there is a lot of overlap.
Lets talk about CFS.
CFS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or ME, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, is a chronic health condition which can affect anyone, including children. It is more common in women then men and tends to develop in individuals aged between their mid-20s and mid-40s. CFS is a condition characterised by severe and persistent fatigue, neurological disturbances, autonomic and endocrine dysfunctions and sleep difficulties (Arroll and Howard, 2012), which can have wide-ranging symptoms.

There is currently not a specific test for CFS/ME available on the NHS, so the condition is diagnosed based on patients
presenting symptoms and by ruling out other conditions that could be causing (similar) symptoms. A Gp can help with some test to eliminate other causes like anaemia/diabetes/deficiencies etc

As a Registered Osteopath I h I treat several patients with these conditions using the Perrin Technique. As the symptoms of CFS/ME are similar to those of many common illnesses that usually get better on their own, a diagnosis of CFS/ME may be considered if a patient does not get better as quickly as expected. It is a chronic long standing condition which patients suffer for several months and often years.

There is no one cause of CFS / it could be a infection or a trauma /familial or other reason. Osteopaths use the Perrin Technique to assist these patients get better.
So why is The Perrin Technique??

The Perrin Technique™
What Is The Perrin Technique?
The Perrin Technique™ is an osteopathic approach developed in 1989, by Mr Raymond Perrin , originally for ME/CFS, that aims to manually drain toxins from the cerebrospinal fluid into the lymphatic system. Movement of the spine and massage of the soft tissues in the head, neck, back and chest directs all the toxins out of the lymphatic system and into the blood, where they are eventually detoxified in the liver. His theory is that a build up toxins in the lymphatic system is the biggest cause of these symptoms. There is an influence of the mitochondria that contributes to CFS / PVS / ME etc etc

Eventually, with less poisons affecting the central nervous system, the hypothalamus and the sympathetic nervous system begin to function correctly, restoring health to the patient.
Some of the symptoms of these conditions are as follows:

Sleep issues
muscle or joint pain
headaches
a sore throat or sore glands that are not swollen
brain fog: problems with thinking, remembering or concentrating
flu-like symptoms
feeling dizzy or sick
fast or irregular heartbeats (heart palpitations)
a difficultly in regulating blood pressure from sitting to standing
being an ‘achiever,’ ‘helper’ or ‘anxious’ personality-type
inability to cope with the exhaustion of social interactions
pacing issues
poor stress tolerance

Everyones case is individual and as can osteopath it is possible to asses each case and treat the individual.

I saw one of my neighbours about 3 weeks ago walking down the street with crutches.... luckily he didn't fall over !! So last week I popped round to see what was going on. I hadn't seen them for a while. Anyway popped round and he had NO crutches !!! So 'Bob ' I said what's been going on with you. I saw you with crutches 3 weeks ago..... are you okay!!
Anyway he continues to tell me that he had had a knee replacement 2-3 weeks prior to me seeing him with crutches. That explained his crutches......
What impressed me and what I wanted to share was when I went to visit him he came to the door .... NO sign of crutches or a walking stick in sight literally 5-7 weeks after his recent knee surgery. He showed me his range of movement , he could bend his knee to 115 degrees !!!! and those of you that have had knee replacements know how great that is!! He could do a shallow squat and was waling normally.
Boy was I impressed at him... how he was moving and the fact he had very little pain. As the conversation continued he told me about all the exercises he was doing and what the physio's had given him as exercises. His hospital have been great and the physio's have really backed him up.
But I have to give Bob my neighbour credit for all his hard work and sheer determination to get going and get his knee strong again. He was never very mobile or fit ( sorry Bob !!) but he look fab when I went to see him last week.
Big take from this for anyone having any joint replacement is to listen and take on board all the advice that the experts give you especially the physiotherapists. Their
advice is invaluable ..... only if you follow it. And follow the exercises regularly!
The first 4-16 weeks post surgery are vital. What you do then is going to hold you steadfast. Listen to your body. Consider YOUR limitations. Stay within those boundaries ... do not overdo it and cause damage. But what is vital is ..... keep moving !! Put in effort.... it pays off!!
All the best to anyone seeing their orthropod soon and having a joint replacement.
