10 years of laser prostate surgery (HoLEP) at the L&D Hospital
The urology department at the L&D celebrates a major milestone this month (June) where they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their laser prostate surgery service. Known as HoLEP (Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) this surgery helps men who have difficulty passing urine or end up with a catheter from an enlarged prostate. The team at the L&D have completed in excess of 1600 cases and have performed the highest number of HoLEPs with a low-power laser in the UK with excellent results, with over half the patients operated as day-case surgery. Apart from being offered as day-case surgery meaning that the majority of patients can return to the comfort of their own home the same day that aids their recovery, patients have a shorter period of needing a catheter after the operation and very few need a further operation in their lifetime for further enlargement of their prostate meaning this is a cost-effective treatment for the NHS. The team, lead by Mr Farooq Khan and Mr Asad Saleemi includes Mr Barney Barrass and Mr Anish Pushkaran, have presented their outcome data at the international American, European and British meetings on multiple occasions. The team teach budding HoLEP surgeons on a nationally recognised training programme at the L&D that trains surgeons to take this technique to benefit patients around the country. Additionally, both Mr Khan and Mr Saleemi until recently ran a national twice yearly HoLEP Masterclass and both are invited speakers and senior faculty members to teach this surgical technique around the country and continue to support the development of HoLEP surgery in the UK.
With the support of the fantastic team in the urology department the HoLEP service has received excellent feedback for its training and recently the department have upgraded & expanded their laser machines to be ready for the next 10 years of laser prostate surgery and have the ambition to continue to remain a high volume national training unit. In addition, Mr Khan has lead the introduction of further treatments to the L&D that help men with their urinary symptoms, specifically Urolift (clips into the prostate) and Rezum (steam therapy to the prostate) which are all available at the L&D and through the Cobham Clinic.
If you are interested in a seeing Mr Khan for a private consultation about your urinary symptoms and to discuss options to best suit your individual needs please contact the Cobham Clinic or his private secretary.
