Mother’s Day can look a little different on a Special Care Baby Unit. 💗

While many families spend the day at home with cuddles on the sofa, some mums are spending it beside incubators, monitors, and tiny hospital cots. But one thing will always be the same, the love between a mum and her baby.

Today our nurses and midwives have done their very best to make the day feel special. From thoughtful cards with tiny footprints, to flowers, gifts, and balloons, small gestures that remind these incredible mums just how important they are. 🌸

Because even in the neonatal unit, every mum deserves to feel celebrated.

To all the mothers spending Mother’s Day beside their little fighters, we see you, we admire you, and we are honoured to care for you and your babies. 💕

Happy Mother’s Day. 💐👣

Sending love this Mother’s Day 💗

Mother’s Day can bring many different emotions. Today we are thinking of and sending love to:

• Those who have lost a baby
• Those longing to become a mum
• Those who are expecting
• New mums finding their feet
• Foster mums and step mums
• Mums doing it on their own
• Mums figuring it out day by day
• Those missing their own mum
• Anyone who may be finding today difficult
• And every mum who gives their heart to a child

For some families, Mother’s Day may look different, especially for those spending it beside their baby in special care. Please know you are not alone. We see your strength and the incredible love you show every day.

Today we honour every journey to motherhood and every kind of mum.

💗 From all of us in the maternity and neonatal team, we are thinking of you.

💜 How to Dress Your Baby for Sleep – Safer Sleep Week

Knowing how to dress your baby for sleep can sometimes feel confusing, especially as room temperatures change. Keeping your baby at a comfortable temperature is an important part of safer sleep.

🌡️ The recommended room temperature for babies is 16–20°C.

Here are some simple guidelines to follow:

✔️ 16–20°C: A baby grow with a baby sleeping bag, or a baby grow with a lightweight, firmly tucked blanket.
✔️ Cooler than 16°C: Add an extra clothing layer or choose a higher tog sleeping bag.
✔️ Warmer than 20°C: Dress your baby in lighter clothing, such as a short-sleeve bodysuit.
✔️ Very warm weather: A vest or even just a nappy may be enough.

👶 Check if your baby is too hot by feeling their chest or the back of their neck. If their skin feels hot or sweaty, remove a layer.

Every baby is different, so use these as a guide and check your baby regularly to keep them comfortable and safe while they sleep.

💤 Keeping babies at the right temperature helps support safer sleep.

💜 Safe Sleep Essentials- Safer Sleep Week

When it comes to your baby’s sleep space, keeping it simple is the safest option. You don’t need lots of products or expensive equipment, just the key essentials to help keep your baby safe while they sleep.

Safe sleep essentials include:
✔️ A cot with a firm, flat, waterproof mattress
✔️ A separate sleep space such as a Moses basket, carry cot or travel cot
✔️ A baby sleeping bag or lightweight bedding
✔️ A room thermometer to help keep the room between 16–20°C
✔️ A car seat for travel (but not for routine sleeping when not travelling)

Following safer sleep guidance can help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Simple sleep spaces are the safest sleep spaces. 💤

💜 Safe Sleep Week | Sofa Safety 💜

As part of Safe Sleep Week with The Lullaby Trust, today we’re highlighting an important message about sofa safety.

🚫 Sofas and armchairs are not safe places to sleep with your baby.

Falling asleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by up to 50 times.

We know the early days with a newborn can be exhausting, especially during night feeds. If you feel sleepy:

✔️ Place your baby in a clear, flat sleep space such as a cot or Moses basket
✔️ Make sure baby is placed on their back for every sleep
✔️ If you think you might fall asleep while feeding, try to feed on a bed instead of a sofa and make the space as safe as possible

Small changes can make a big difference in keeping babies safe.

Throughout the week we’ll continue sharing simple advice to support safer sleep for every baby and every family.

🌸 Celebrating the Women Who Make Our Unit Extraordinary 🌸

Today, on International Women’s Day, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible women who make our unit the caring, compassionate, and supportive place that it is.

To the medics, midwives, nurses, support staff, admin teams, and domestics, your dedication, skill, and kindness make a difference every single day. You work tirelessly behind the scenes and at the bedside to support babies, mothers, and families when they need it most.

We also celebrate the strong and inspiring women who walk through our doors, the mothers, partners, daughters, and grandmothers whose strength and love shape the very heart of our unit.

Today is about recognising the care, resilience, teamwork, and compassion that each of you brings. Together, you create a community where women support women, lifting each other up through some of life’s most important moments.

✨ Thank you for everything you do.
✨ Thank you for your strength.
✨ Thank you for being part of our story.

Happy International Women’s Day to all the amazing women in our unit and beyond. 💜

✨🌟Feedback Friday 🌟✨

“To all of the incredible nurses and midwives who cared for Nancy and me between 7th-9th December

I want to thank each and every one of you for the extraordinary care, support, and kindness you showed me during my time in hospital. Your generosity, reassuring words and infectious smiles made such a profound difference in one of the most vulnerable times of my life.

Every single one of you left a beautiful impression on our experience. Especially Britt, Liz, Chi chi, Lucy, Kirsty, and Sara. You never once made a question feel silly, a moment feel embarrassing, or a worry feel unreasonable. You made me feel safe, supported, and truly cared for, and that is something I will never forget.

I am genuinely in awe of what you do. You may not always realise the impact you have, but as a first-time mum, I will be forever grateful to you all. I honestly wish I could do it all again.

Love of love, Jaymie, Tom and Nancy 🤍 💛”

Congratulations and welcome to the world Nancy
