What is SandStory Therapy®?

SandStory Therapy® is a gentle, creative, and non-directive therapeutic approach for children and adults (ages 8-88) that uses a sandbox, water, and miniature symbols to help clients express, explore, and heal by creating a visual story of their inner world. It acts as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious, allowing for the processing of difficult emotions, trauma, and self-awareness without needing to rely solely on words.

Back in September last year, I applied to become a Creative Partner for the Experiment programme for the . In November, I was invited to attended the new training and last week I was so excited to be informed that I had been matched to a school. Looking forward to yet another new opportunity and getting to be part of a journey where the process of creativity, curiosity and collaboration empower learning and self development of all involved.

In play therapy, children may not use words to tell their stories, but they communicate powerfully through play, symbols, movement and silence. When a play therapist offers deep, non-judgemental presence without directing, fixing, or shaping the child’s experience the child feels truly heard.

Being listened to in this way allows the child to re-experience their world safely through play. As their feelings, struggles and strengths are accepted and reflected back with empathy, new meanings emerge. From this place of being understood, children are able to integrate their experiences, restore a sense of agency and move forward in their own time and in their own way.

The child who never causes any trouble can be the easiest to overlook - but sometimes ‘perfect’ behaviour is an actually sign of struggle.

When children are ALWAYS compliant, always agreeable, and never express their own needs or opinions, they may have learned that their authentic self isn’t safe to show.

They might be working incredibly hard to stay invisible, to keep everyone happy, or to avoid any conflict that feels dangerous.

These children need our attention just as much as those who act out - they just show their distress differently.

If you notice a child who seems “too good,” consider asking yourself: do they feel safe enough to disagree with me? To express frustration? To have their own preferences? Do they know they’re valued even when they’re not being perfect?

Creating school environments where all children - including the quiet, compliant ones - feel safe to be authentically themselves requires understanding and intentional practice. As a Play and Creative Arts therapist, the Sand-tray and symbols have always been a significant part of my work. I can’t explain the power of the sand and the use of metaphors in being able to express thoughts, emotions or situation in the sand whilst being emotionally held by a therapist and the space. 💖

My love of sand took me on a journey and lead me to becoming a Sandstory therapist.
Sandstory sessions are now part of my offering and I love seeing the benefits it offers.
