Before turning to painting, spent many years working as an actor in theatre, television and documentaries šŸŽ

That background still shapes how he approaches the canvas today.

For Carraro, a painting is like a stage. Colours become costumes, shapes become actors, and the painter becomes the director guiding the performance.

Many of his works centre around faces and characters, often inspired by small moments observed in everyday life. A passing expression, a stranger on a bus, a fleeting encounter that lingers in memory.

These observations slowly transform into figures on the canvas, carrying fragments of story and emotion.

In this month’s Featured Artist, we explore Carraro’s approach to painting, his theatrical influences, and the ideas behind works like Maria Dolores.

Thank you to Siro for letting us share his amazing work!

Craig on his classic Vespa, 1989 (?) just unearthed by his brother Dean. Huge thanks to my good friend and former bandmate Neil, who first shared it with me earlier today …We went through a lot together, us lot. Times riding on the back of this scooter … rediculously loud stereo … got stopped by the cops because of it … or something like that …

Seeing this now, decades later, is both beautiful and bittersweet. The timing is uncanny: I’ve recently come across the lost tapes from that year, our early experimental recordings. It’s strange and moving how the past keeps finding its way back to us.

Craig left us far too young, but his energy, ideas, and spirit are still alive in so much of what I do. Can it really be a quarter of a century ago that he left us all behind to journey onwards?! šŸ¤ÆšŸŒ€ā€¦Even my own name ā€˜Boohai’ comes from those early bands and conversations—our talks about philosophy, psychology, journeys through the universe. The work we did then, niche and wild, still echoes today.

We’re now mixing this experimental material, soundscapes, snippets, whatever it is exactly and hope to have it released into the wild by the end of this year. I think Craig would be very proud that it’s finally going to be heard … cos as weird n niche as the recordings are it was very real and we wore no masks when making it šŸ˜¬šŸ˜šŸ‘ŒšŸ»šŸ¦ā€šŸ”„

To anyone who’s lost a brother, a friend, or a kindred spirit: I’m thinking of you. #1989

1990s confession from me, the Chief Visionary:

Back at Phoenix Festival, the flyer was insane—David Bowie, Public Enemy, Neil Young, Dodgy, Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers, the S*x Pistols… and Alanis Morissette. Wild times. Real, unrepeatable, people-on-the-bill-were-everywhere moments. I had… interesting encounters with some of them, Ice-T included—but that’s another story.

But here’s the confession: I didn’t skip my own show to hang out with Alanis. I stayed, I played, I survived the chaos. Bjƶrk was there too, naturally. And beyond that—what happens on tour stays on tour.

Why this post? I got an anonymous email saying they’d heard I used to be a circus performer—and wondered how that fits with running a micronation. I found it pretty funny, because yes, I spent years doing street theatre, performance art, festivals, all kinds of creative stuff. If that worries anyone about a micronation, they’ve completely missed the point. It’s all about creativity, expression, progress, and thinking outside the box—less about wild encounters and more about chilled, imaginative energy that’s actually much more forward-thinking.

Anyway… I’m looking forward to more of that kind of creative energy in the future. And Alanis—sorry I didn’t show up, I was busy doing my show. I promise, it wasn’t personal. šŸ˜‰šŸ˜ŽšŸŒ€

Today we are super pleased to welcome Emily Wilkinson as the micronation’s ā€˜curator of precious sounds’

Emily joins the nation as an honorary citizen and will lead a new exploration into listening, landscape and the hidden music of the world around us.

A writer, walking artist, researcher and coach based in North Wales, Emily creates soundscapes, podcasts, books and interdisciplinary creative projects. Her work explores walking arts, therapeutic landscapes and the deep relationship between people, place and sound.

Emily is currently completing a PhD with Aberystwyth and Exeter Universities, researching walking arts and therapeutic landscapes, funded by the South West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership.

As curator of precious sounds, Emily will begin shaping a living vault of precious sounds for the citizens of the micronation — a slowly growing archive of atmospheres, textures and moments gathered from the audible world.

Natural sound, distant sound, forgotten sound.
Sounds that calm. Sounds that provoke curiosity.
Sounds that seem to hold a memory of a place.

From this unfolding archive we’ll begin exploring what these sounds might become — listening journeys, creative resources, shared moments of stillness, or something we haven’t yet imagined.

Its been a steep learning curve over the past 15 years of living offgrid and about 20 years of managing a woodland rewinding project. I’m super pleased to be able to offer free consultancy sessions to founding citizens, this can be offgrid support, low impact living tips, ecological advice or chatting about how we started from zero soil in many areas at Bron Yr Aur and managed to get up to 80% self supply of our fruit, vegetables and herbs etc … šŸŒ±šŸ¦ā€šŸ”„āœŒļø

From the US to Wales āœˆļø

Last week, in one intense night, eight tracks were recorded inside Bron Yr Aur, the cottage that inspired Led Zeppelin, blending the warmth of the 1970s with modern digital precision.

In our micronation, creativity isn’t something we just talk about.

When citizens show up with work, we support it. We open the studio, we give it time & we uplift!

That is what this community is for ā¤ļø

If this is something you'd love to be part of, reach out to us.

Last week at Bron Yr Aur šŸ˜

Recording artist Eddy Dyer travelled from the US to record a new album, becoming the first Founding Citizen to visit after joining the micronation.

He flew in from the East Coast during a severe snowstorm that disrupted thousands of flights across the region. Despite the conditions, he arrived just in time for an intensive recording session.

In a single night, eight tracks were recorded, blending the warmth of 1970s analogue equipment with modern digital tools.

The album is now in the final stages of mixing and mastering under the guidance of chief visionary Boohai and will be released soon.

You can explore Eddy’s music on Bandcamp and follow him on Instagram
