We now live in a world where there’s more information than ever.

Endless training videos, rehab guides and advice from every corner of the internet.

But more information isn’t the answer to your progress.

More access doesn’t mean better results.

In fact, it often leads to confusion, overthinking and chasing the wrong things.

For every solid resource, there’s just as much poor advice steering you in the wrong direction.

The real solution?

Understand your story, your past, what’s worked, what hasn’t, where you want to go, and how to get there.

You don’t need more information.

You need the right plan, the right focus and the discipline to execute it consistently.

I’ve been there.

I was an athlete who faced numerous challenges in the form of recurring injuries.

It seemed like every time I started making progress, I would be taken out of action by yet another setback.

These injuries not only caused physical pain, but also had a significant impact on my ability to perform upon returning.

Through the setbacks, I learned lots about myself personally and it put me down the route I am currently on.

The injuries became opportunities to learn about myself.

You can probably relate to the fact that every time you suffer an injury, you take time out to rest, but upon returning, feel like your performance is way off.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

You should use your injury as an opportunity to focus on other aspects of your performance YOU CAN work on.

You should be able to return to play and perform at a a level as high as you left or even better.

If you want to use your injury as an opportunity to return as a better athlete, reach out and we can get a chat.

This summer has been a period of growth, both professionally and personally. Through my internship at Salford Football Club and the expansion of my online rehab and performance coaching, I’ve gained invaluable insights into injury rehab, coaching, and self-development.

Internship Experience at Salford FC:

Working with pro athletes at Salford FC has been incredibly informative. It pushed me to delve deeper into soleus and hamstring rehab, highlighting the complexity of these injuries. A key takeaway was the difference in recovery timelines between pros and amateurs. For professionals, recovery can be quicker due to the resources available and their full-time focus. This reinforced the need for amateur athletes to avoid comparing themselves to pros—rehab is unique and based on individual circumstances, support systems, and care.

Growth in Online Coaching:

My online rehab and performance coaching continues to thrive. Clients are progressing physically and mentally, embracing the challenges of rehab. I’ve seen firsthand the importance of education, which led me to create an exclusive education portal. This portal is now a valuable resource, offering tools and content that empower clients to understand their rehab journey and take ownership of their progress. It adds an extra layer of support, keeping them engaged and motivated.

Training & Reflection:

This summer, I’ve maintained a solid training routine, using it not only as a physical outlet but also as a space for creativity and problem-solving. Training has become a mental space to innovate and explore new approaches, allowing me to refine my coaching philosophy and feel more connected to my practice.

Reflections & Looking Forward:

This summer has been all about learning, evolving, and moving forward. Whether through hands-on work with professional athletes, guiding clients through rehab, or personal growth in my own training, significant progress has been made. The journey doesn’t stop here—full steam ahead for a big 9 months! 👊🏻

Why Do You Need a Step-by-Step Rehab Plan?

I like to explain rehab by comparing it to real-life events. Imagine you’re on a staircase, with each step representing a different stage of your recovery.

Right now, you’re at the bottom—dealing with pain or not performing at your best. Our first goal is to reduce pain and address key weaknesses, helping your body start moving again without overexertion. These initial steps are crucial; they lay the foundation for your entire recovery journey. As you progress, the exercises will become more challenging, gradually improving your body’s resilience.

As you climb higher, you’ll notice your confidence growing. Each step reinforces to your brain that it’s safe to move and load your body again. I understand there’s fear—fear of pain, fear of reinjury—but with each step, you’ll see that fear diminish as your strength and movement improve.

There will be ups and downs along the way. Some days, you might feel like you’re cruising to the top; other days, it may feel like you’re stuck or even slipping backward. That’s okay. Rehab, like anything worth achieving, isn’t always linear. Pain is your body’s way of giving you feedback—it’s not something to fear but to listen to as you work through the process and adapt as needed. The key is to keep moving forward, even if it’s just a small step each day.

As we move up these stairs, we’ll start incorporating more complex movements—like running, changing direction, and more—tailored to your specific needs. These steps transition you from deliberate, cautious movements to the effortless, confident movement that allow you to perform without fear. But remember, you have to earn the right to take these steps. Each level of rehab builds on the last, ensuring you’re ready to handle the next challenge without setbacks.

At the top of this staircase is your goal: pain-free and able to perform without limits. It won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight. But by following a step-by-step progressive rehab plan and putting in the work, you’ll get there.

You’ll reach the top, stronger and more confident than ever, ready to take on whatever comes next.

The obstacle becomes the opportunity.

I’ve had my fair share of injuries growing up, which ultimately led me to the path I am on today. In 2017, at 17, I made the Derry minor team, playing corner back. Football was everything. That year, we lost to Kerry in an All-Ireland Quarter final, but I was struggling with patella tendinopathy, which had been constant for 3-4 years.

I finished the season, but my knee got worse. The rehab and advice I was getting didn’t help, and I was in constant pain. I couldn’t walk, run, or jump without it impacting my movement. I had to stop because I couldn’t function, and my performance and headspace suffered. I was told to take 6 months off to get it right or face worse outcomes.

I stepped away from the minor squad the following year for private rehab and the best support. For the next 6 months, I isolated myself, doing heavy rehab 3 times a week. I thought focusing only on rehab would ensure I returned better. Disclaimer: In hindsight, isolating myself didn’t make things easier, but it felt right at the time.

In Summer 2018, I returned to club football after 6 months of rehab and played the last 2 league games before the championship. The knee felt great, and I felt back to my best. For the first time in a long time, I was pain-free and could move without limitations. We won the club championship that year and reached the Ulster final.

Reflecting, it was a challenging but positive experience. I questioned my identity without football and used the experience to become a better person and athlete. I did lots right and lots wrong, but it taught me a lot. Lived experience: the most invaluable asset as a coach and rehab practitioner🤝

Let’s talk about setbacks.

We’ve all experienced them, right?

Whether it’s a nagging injury, a plateau in progress, or simply feeling demotivated, setbacks are part of the journey, especially in overcoming pain.

But here’s the thing - they don’t define us and give rise to opportunities to learn from challenging experiences.

What defines us is how we respond and interpret the scenario.

So if you’re feeling discouraged, remember, you’re not alone.

If you want support in turning your setbacks and pain into an opportunity like Derbhla did, reach out and we can chat.

We’re here to support you every step of the way. 👊📈

Every athlete part of the Rehab & Performance Programme shares the collective aim of enhancing their on-pitch performance.

However, each player embarks on a unique journey toward this goal.

They may find themselves at varying stages of progression or facing different circumstances.

Nonetheless, one constant prevails: each athlete has a defined plan to execute and progress through the necessary steps to achieve their desired outcome.

Those who commit to their plan and leverage available support tend to experience the most significant gains.

The formula is simple: Establish a plan, put in the effort, and enjoy the results!
