▪️January is often the time parents will think about starting their child's speech and language therapy journey. New Year, fresh starts and the motivation to make changes.

▪️It is important to think of all the advantages and disadvantages of private speech therapy. Waiting times are likely to be much shorter but the commitment for home practice may be difficult with everyday family life. The cost of regular private sessions may not be affordable, particularly if travelling a distance to access services.
As with anything, weigh up the pros and cons first and decide if the time is right!

⭐️3 Top Tips for working on Speech Sounds⭐️

Speech sound work can be fun and you can still get all the practice in without making it seem like work!
It doesn't have to be done at a table and incorporating some movement into activities can be really motivating if a child can't focus for long periods.
I use these 3 activities all the time in clinic and very often children will ask for them.....particularly hide and seek!

👶 What is Aspiration? (and how to spot it!)

Aspiration happens when food, drink, saliva, or stomach contents accidentally go “down the wrong pipe” — into the lungs instead of the stomach.

💧 Why it matters:
When food or liquid gets into the lungs, it can cause coughing, infections, or even pneumonia.

✨ Watch for these signs:
👂 Parents often notice things like:

Coughing or choking while eating or drinking

Wet or gurgly voice after swallowing

Breathing fast or noisy after meals

Frequent chest infections

Poor weight gain

Turning red or blue while feeding

If you have any concerns seek an SLT referral for assessment of Eating, Drinking and Swallowing!
