📖 WORLD BOOK DAY 2026 📖

😀To celebrate World Book Day tomorrow here are some top tips on using books to support speech and language development 😀

📚Build Vocabulary – Stories naturally introduce new words in meaningful contexts. Pause to explain new words and to connect them to your child’s experiences.

💬 Encourage Conversation – Ask open-ended questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “How is the character feeling?” This builds expressive language and reasoning skills.

🧠 Develop Listening & Attention – Following a story strengthens focus, auditory processing, and memory. Try retelling the story together to boost recall skills.

🎭 Support Speech Sound Practic@e – Choose books with repeated phrases or specific sounds to practice sounds in a fun, low-pressure way.

Children who are Gestalt Language Processors will go through stages when developing language in this way. They will move from use of chunks of language towards more flexible use of original language.
Use of specific language modelling techniques and child led interactions can help to support GLPs through these stages 😀

When planning sessions for children who are Gestalt Language Processors we think about special interests....especially when trying to build engagement and interaction!
Using the 3-2-1 rule....2 activities the child likes and is familiar with and 1 new activity we can build rapport and opportunities for language modelling 😄

Engagement and interaction are important foundation skills for speech and language development.

Engagement means how a child participates in the therapy session—paying attention, responding, and being involved in the activities and communication tasks.

Interaction is the back-and-forth exchange between the child and another person. It involves shared attention, turn-taking, responding and initiating, and using verbal or nonverbal communication to connect, and build communication skills.

If you feel your child isn't making progress in speech and language therapy take a step back and think about some of the other ways we measure progress 😊
Small steps are still progress and should be celebrated!

▪️January is often the time parents will think about starting their child's speech and language therapy journey. New Year, fresh starts and the motivation to make changes.

▪️It is important to think of all the advantages and disadvantages of private speech therapy. Waiting times are likely to be much shorter but the commitment for home practice may be difficult with everyday family life. The cost of regular private sessions may not be affordable, particularly if travelling a distance to access services.
As with anything, weigh up the pros and cons first and decide if the time is right!
