Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is a large acute hospital Trust in the south east of England. The Trust was legally established on 14 February 2000 and provides a full range of general hospital services, and some areas of specialist complex care to around 560,000 people living in the south of West Kent and the north of East Sussex. The Trust’s core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs, and it operates from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. The latter is a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital and provides wholly single bedded en-suite accommodation for in-patients. The Trust employs a team of over 5000 full and part-time staff. In addition, the Trust provides specialist cancer services to around 1.8 million people across Kent, Hastings and Rother, via the Kent Oncology Centre, which is sited at Maidstone Hospital, and at Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury. The Trust also provides outpatient clinics across a wide range of locations in Kent and East Sussex. Our private services are generating vital income, which helps improve care for everyone.

Unlike many private providers, every penny earned through Wells Health, our private service, stays within the NHS.

This income is reinvested into frontline care – funding new equipment, improving facilities and helping reduce waiting times for patients.

In the last financial year (2024/25) Wells Health treated more than 11,000 private patients, generating £6.4million for the Trust.

Dr David Golden, Consultant Anaesthetist and Chief of Service for Wells Health said: "Our private services are not about profit—they are about reinvestment.

"By keeping private care within the NHS, we ensure the highest standards of safety and quality while creating resources that benefit everyone."

Congratulations to Lord North Ward at Maidstone Hospital and Josly Joseph, Clinical Skills Facilitator at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, our latest IPC award winners! 🙌

🧫 Infection prevention and control (IPC) helps prevent the spread of germs, keeping patients and staff safe.

Excellence awards are presented to departments or individuals showing exemplary practice, and the winners for November were:

⭐ Josly Joseph, Clinical Skills Facilitator at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, who caught the judging panel’s eye with her excellent teaching resources, developed to support the orthopaedic teams.

⭐ Lord North Ward at Maidstone Hospital who saw some excellent audit improvements during a particularly challenging time for the ward.

Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, Luke Grant, said: “There were several areas and individuals in contention...and each area we spoke to should be extremely proud of the work they are doing to ensure their patients are kept safe.”

Well done everyone! 👏

📽️ 24 hours NOT in A&E.

When you need help, A&E might seem like the obvious choice.

There are other ways to get medical help when you need it, and it's not an emergency.

This nhs.uk film shows how to get the right care, in the right place, at the right time – and help keep emergency services for those who need them most this winter.

⚠️ Help us protect our most vulnerable patients this winter.

Postpone your visit to patients in our hospitals if you are feeling unwell or have a high temperature.

If you have had sickness or diarrhoea, you can help reduce the spread of infection by:

🏠 Staying at home for 48 hours after symptoms clear

⛔ Not visiting hospitals or care homes

🧼 Washing hands thoroughly with soap and warm water

🧽 Cleaning surfaces using bleach-based products

👩‍🍳 Not preparing food for others.

If you need healthcare advice, use www.111.nhs.uk or call 111.

A remarkable act of generosity by The Peggy Wood Foundation is already making a difference to cancer patients.

The Foundation made an incredibly generous donation of £93,000 to our MTW Hospitals Charity to purchase five double scalp coolers, giving many more people the option to reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss during treatment.

The coolers are in daily use on Charles Dickens ward, making an immediate and meaningful difference to patients.

Chairman of the Foundation, Bryn Annis, visited the unit last week to unveil a commemorative plaque, recognising the Foundation’s generosity and its ongoing support for the Kent Oncology Centre.

Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy Matron, Lisa Godsiff and Junior Sister, Hannah Van Noort were on hand to show how this investment is enhancing the experience for patients.

Head of Charity and Fundraising, Claire Ashby, said: “We are so grateful when our local community gives back to our hospitals, allowing us to support our patients with incredible innovations and treatment experiences.

Our ongoing working relationship with The Peggy Wood Foundation and other local charities who support our work is essential in helping us meet the needs of the growing number of patients we care for each year”.

A huge thank you to Bryn Annis and the Peggy Wood Foundation for their ongoing support! 💙

Last week we welcomed year 8 and 9 students from local schools to our Academic Centre at Maidstone Hospital for a careers day.

Pupils from Benenden School, Invicta Grammar School, Maidstone Grammar School, Bower Grove School, The Skinners' Kent Academy, The Malling School, St Augustine Academy, the School of Science and Technology, Maidstone, and Maidstone and Malling Alternative Provision, had the chance to find out about different NHS roles and which subjects might help them reach their career goals.

They took part in an NHS jobs quiz, and visited a marketplace with interactive displays and expert staff to answer questions.

Students had the opportunity to practise plastering fractured joints, and handle some of the specialist instruments used in theatres.

They also had the chance to take part in immersive simulation rooms, where they practiced taking pulses, using stethoscopes and were able to learn about resuscitation using manikins.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and thank you to all our teams who volunteered their time to help run the event smoothly and inspire the next generation of NHS professionals! 💙

It’s International Volunteer Day and we want to say a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers!

They're a vital part of life in our hospitals: meeting and greeting, helping people find their way around, keeping patients company and sitting with them during treatments, supporting hospital radio, our chaplaincy team, and working with Maidstone Hospital League of Friends and Friends of Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

They are a friendly face at a stressful time for patients and families, and together they've given over 30,000 hours of their time this year!

This week we held a special Christmas lunch at Maidstone Hospital to thank them for their help and support.

A huge thank you to our volunteers for everything you do to help our patients and staff, and to our Voluntary Services team for helping make it all possible. You are all amazing! 💙

🏆✨A team providing support to cancer patients have received an award for the care they give to patients living with myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. 💙

Maidstone Hospital has been presented with the Myeloma UK UK Clinical Service Excellence Programme Award.

The judging panel praised staff for their focus on enhancing quality of life and their willingness to listen and respond to patients’ needs.

For Richard Gurton, from Kings Hill, early diagnosis made all the difference. “The care and attention that I’ve had at Maidstone has been fantastic,” he said.

“I feel very fortunate for the early diagnosis followed by speedy referral, tests and the start of treatment - all within seven weeks."

Claire Herbert, Myeloma Clinical Nurse Specialist said the awards "recognises the myeloma team's commitment to providing the highest standard of care, compassion, and support for our patients."

Suzanne Renwick, Head of Clinical Practice Services at Myeloma UK, said: "Myeloma is a challenging cancer which keeps coming back and can be difficult to cope with both physically and mentally, so patients really need a caring team in their corner.

"It’s very clear that staff at Maidstone Hospital work hard every day to help patients navigate treatment and the reality of living with an incurable cancer."

Congratulations team! 🙌

"The trust was brilliant" - Physiotherapist, Nicole Bodenham talks about challenging assumptions around disability and employment in Chartered Society of Physiotherapy magazine, Frontline.

Nicole was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) as a teenager, before sustaining a traumatic brain injury and developing epilepsy at university.

Despite advice to take a year out, she was determined to graduate with her cohort.

When applying for her role at MTW, Nicole decided to be open about her conditions, completing a staff health passport outlining what her conditions look like on good and bad days and what support might be needed, so she can work safely and effectively.

Nicole has developed confidence in educating others, saying: "I’ve delivered presentations about POTS, completed audits and spoken at clinical governance sessions.

"It’s rewarding to...use my lived experience to inform better understanding."

Her message is one of positivity and hope. ‘With the right support, you can absolutely do it.’
