On Tuesday we attended The Restful Rehabilitation Conference, held by Lime Solicitors in Birmingham, which focused on the importance of sleep after trauma.💤

It was a fantastic afternoon of inspiring talks and discussion about the importance of rest, sleep hygiene and its significance in the recovery and rehabilitation process.

We know how integral sleep and fatigue management is in brain injury recovery, so it was great to have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other professionals about how we can prioritise rest and promote sustainable recovery for our clients.

Thank you to all the inspiring speakers for their insights and guidance, and to Lime solicitors & sponsors for hosting such an engaging event!

For many living with brain injuries, Bonfire Night can bring unexpected challenges such as fatigue, sensory overload and anxiety. What feels like a few minutes of fun can take days to recover from.

This Bonfire Night, let’s remember to look out for our friends, neighbours, colleagues, and loved ones who may need calm rather than celebration. Here are a few ways you can make your celebrations more accessible and brain injury friendly.

Happy celebrating!🔥🎆

It's 🧠🔬

Pathology provides the blueprint for understanding the behavioural, cognitive, and emotional changes after brain injury.

Every tailored strategy we use in neurorehabilitation is grounded in what pathology has helped to reveal to us about brain function. During national pathology week, we are celebrating the science that gives us insight into the brain and the people who turn that knowledge into strategies for recovery💪

🌟 Meet Caroline, BIS Research Lead and Senior Cognitive Rehabilitation Assistant🌟

🎓Caroline holds a BSocSci in Psychology from the University of Cape Town and an MSc in Psychology from the University of Hertfordshire. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Psychology at the University of Reading and has also completed the Medical Neuroscience Course from Duke University.

🧠Caroline joined BIS Services in 2019 as a Cognitive Rehabilitation Assistant and has since gained extensive experience supporting individuals with brain injuries. In March 2024, she became the organisation’s Research Lead, overseeing BIS’s first major research project evaluating the effectiveness of Cognitive Rehabilitation Assistants in supporting community-based goal attainment for individuals with traumatic brain injury. Her work aims to inform and strengthen best practices in neurorehabilitation.

🔬Alongside her research leadership, Caroline mentors and supervises research assistants, guiding them through study design, data collection, and analysis. She has a specialist interest in the relationship between executive functioning and emotion regulation in brain injury and neurodegenerative disease, and her published work includes research on wayfinding impairments in TBI using virtual reality applications. Passionate about innovation, she is particularly focused on how health technology can improve independence and outcomes for those with cognitive impairments.

🤝Caroline has also delivered brain injury education workshops for clients and led cognitive strategy implementation training for Cognitive Rehabilitation Assistants to enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

Outside of work, she is an avid equestrian — having been in the saddle since before she could walk. 🐎

The real fright this Halloween lies in the failures of the brain injury support system.

Too many brain injury survivors are left navigating recovery without the right rehab, funding, or sufficient guidance. Access to specialist neurorehabilitation shouldn’t be a privilege. It’s a necessity.

's damning 'When Funding Fails' report, released earlier this year, lays out the devastating impact that funding cuts are having on brain injury survivors and their families across the UK.

We are seeing crisis in community-based services leading to service closures, reduced support hours for survivors, increased reliance on more costly, and often inappropriate, state services, and significant strain on brain injury charities and carers.

We've heard too many horror stories about this. It’s time to shine a light on what’s truly scary - build a system that supports brain injury survivors beyond survival, and doesn't ghost people who need support.👻🎃

I'm sure most people aren't even aware that it's , but at BIS Services, we're very excited about it!😅

Sometimes, it’s the smallest tools that make the biggest difference.
In brain injury rehabilitation, checklists aren’t just about staying organised — they’re about rebuilding:

✅confidence
✅clarity
✅independence
✅calm

After a brain injury, memory, attention, and planning can all be affected. A simple checklist can act as an external brain, helping you structure you day, track you progress, and feel more in control.

At BIS, we celebrate simple, practical tools like these that empower people to live meaningfully and independently. Because sometimes, rehabilitation begins not with complexity, but with clarity.

What's on your checklist today?👇💬

It's .

Many will see finishing treatment as the end of the journey, but for survivors, it’s often just the beginning of a new one.

Up to 80% of brain tumour survivors experience lasting neurological effects such as fatigue, memory loss, or changes in mood, attention, and communication. These “invisible” challenges can make everyday life feel unfamiliar and overwhelming, leaving them in need of ongoing support.

Raising awareness means recognising that recovery doesn’t end when medical treatment does. Ongoing neurorehabilitation, understanding, and community support are key to helping individuals rebuild confidence, independence, and identity after a brain tumour.
