Diabetic foot assessments:

Why is it important?

Diabetes can impact your physical Health, mobility and quality of life. It can lessen chances of developing a foot ulcer by getting regular treatments from a clinician and help you to maintain good health habits: maintain a healthy diet that helps keep weight and blood glucose levels low.
Developing a foot ulcer can have serious implications. The ulcers can form as the result of poor blood flow, nerve damage that causes lack of feeling, and irritation or trauma that creates a wound.
Due to lack of feeling or neuropathy, a person may not be aware of the presence of a wound and over time the wound can become infected and worsen.

Self care:

Examine feet regularly for any small injuries or sore spots that may develop into ulcers.
If a wound is found, protect it by washing it well with clean water and a saline (salt) solution.
Apply an antibiotic ointment to keep the wound moist, helping it to heal quicker.
Wrap the area with a bandage and change every 2 days.
Cover the foot with a sock to reduce the pressure on the foot. Special diabetic socks are recommended by the Diabetic Council to help eliminate moisture and prevent blistering.

Ingrowing toe nails or involuted toe nails?

An ingrowing toe nail or onychocryptosis is a painful condition of the toe. It occurs when a sharp corner or edge of the toenail digs into the side of the skin at the end or side of the toe. Pain and inflammation at the spot where the nail curls into the skin occurs first.
An involuted nail is a nail that curls into the flesh but isn't actually piercing the skin. It is not ingrowing but can still feel very painful and can appear red and inflamed.

Athletes foot or Tinea Pedis;

It is a fungal skin infection affecting the feet and more commonly between the toes.
It is a form of ringworm.
It is caused by a dermatophyte and can spread to other areas of the body.

Causes and symptoms:

It can spread to the toenails.
It is not serious but sometimes hard to cure. If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system you should seek medical help right away.
The fungus thrives in warm moist environments. Its commonly found in communal showering areas, on locker room floors and around swimming pools.
Symptoms include itching and burning between the toes, and soles of the feet. Sometimes you may develop itchy blisters, the skin may crack and peel and may become raw and sore. The nails become discoloured, thick and crumbly.

Treatments:

There are many over the counter remedies including Miconazole, Terbinafine, Clotrimazole, Butenafine and Tolnaftate.
Alternative treatments include vinegar, Tea tree oil and vicks vapour rub.

Corns and Callus:

They are hard areas of thickened skin that develop through excessive pressure or friction. They commonly occur on the feet and cause pain and discomfort when walking

Is it a corn or a callus?

A hard corn is a small patch of thickened skin which is dead with a central core.
A soft corn has a much thinner surface and usually occurs between the toes, typically between the little toe and the 4th toe.
Calluses are thickening of the outermost layer of the skin and are usually painless but can be uncomfortable.

What is a verruca/verrucae?

Verrucae pedis are warts that grow from the human papilloma virus on the feet. They grow into the skin as opposed to growing out away from the skin like a wart does on the hand. Essentially they are warts on the feet.
Verrucae love warm moist skin and thrive n these conditions.

How can they be treated?

There are various preparations you can buy over the counter at the pharmacy but what works for one person does not work for everyone and verrucae are stubborn.
With anything you may want to try it is important to always wash your hands after touching a verruca or wart. Change socks regularly and always cover the verruca as they are highly contagious.
There is evidence that as we get older the verrucae regress and spontaneously disappear after any amount of time. However if they are causing pain and discomfort there is a bigger need for treatment to kill the virus.
