My name is Lorraine Prescott and I have been a qualified therapist since 2002. I have a passion for holistic therapies and believe they are an ideal way to counteract the day-to-day stresses so many of us endure, together with assisting in relaxation and helping your body find a state of equilibrium. Christmas will soon be upon us and you may be frantically buying presents – or pulling your hair out as you haven’t a clue what to buy people! 🎄🎁

Amongst the festive madness, do you ever think you deserve a gift too? Maybe the gift of wellness 💜 Taking that much-needed time for you? And, finally doing something just for YOU 🙏

December – a time of the year when the diaries seem to get squeezed from all directions and you land into the New Year feeling exhausted! 😟

Self-care can go out the window during the festive season. Yes, it’s great to do fun things, but everything in life needs an element of balance 🙏

It was an honour to be asked to deliver a Tai Chi Qigong session to the Different Strokes Ashford Kent group on Friday afternoon by Lisa Pearson🙏

What I love about Qigong is its versatility 💗 We came together as a group and people were able to sit, stand, focus on their breath ... doing whatever felt right for them. Performing some of the session standing and some seated, it enabled people to listen to what they needed to do, rather than push on when feeling fatigued.

I was able to stay for the rest of the meeting afterwards where stories were shared over a cuppa and a slice of cake - and my eyes were truly opened by the experiences of all in this wonderful group.

Strokes don't just affect those of a certain age; it can happen at any age and at any time. And so many people are probably unaware of these support groups, where working age stroke survivors, as well as their carers, can connect safely with those who have also been navigating life after a stroke 💜

Different Strokes Ashford Kent meet monthly and it is a super friendly group, so don't feel you have to do this alone - the support is there 🥰

A Gong Bath is a blissful choice for improving your wellbeing – a completely passive way to rebalance your energy as you receive healing with the 'waves' of sounds and vibrations felt during a session. And it's not just woo-woo either!

Earlier in the year I shared an article from Psychology Today about sound healing, which stated:

"Science is still catching up to understanding how sound heals, but the current research is promising. A review of 400 published scientific articles on music as medicine found strong evidence that music has mental and physical health benefits in improving mood and reducing stress. In fact, rhythm in particular (over melody) can provide physical pain relief.

One study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that an hour-long sound meditation helped people reduce tension, anger, fatigue, anxiety, and depression while increasing a sense of spiritual well-being.

Sound-based vibration treatment has been shown to help people with pain from arthritis, menstrual pain, postoperative pain, knee replacement pain. Sound-based treatment has even been found to improve mobility, reduce muscle pain and stiffness, increase blood circulation, and lower blood pressure."

How amazing is that! ✨

No pain, no gain?! Not on my watch! 😟

Discomfort at times – possibly. Painful areas – maybe. Working against what the body is telling me – definitely not!

Our body isn’t something to push through - it’s something to listen to. I don’t believe in pummelling away during a therapeutic massage and, instead, use a variety of techniques and pressures to get the body to yield and release tension 💜

True wellness isn’t about suffering; it’s about support, balance, and gentle practices that work with your system, not against it 💚

And, not all treatments use a deep/firm pressure in any event. Lymphatic drainage massage and ScarWork Therapy are both treatments which use a much lighter pressure. So, those who love deep pressure … this isn’t for you!

However, if you’re dealing with recurring infections (colds, flu, chest infections etc); have a build-up of toxins, oedema, or bloating; have recently had surgery and are dealing with post-op swelling; or are struggling with post-viral conditions (glandular fever, ME etc), migraine, sinusitis … lymphatic drainage massage could be a therapy you need.

And, unlike deep tissue techniques, ScarWork Therapy does not break down scar tissue aggressively. Instead, it promotes a natural reorganisation of tissue through gentle stimulation of the body's own healing responses. ScarWork Therapy can be beneficial months or even years after the initial injury or surgery … and may even be a therapy you haven’t heard of before?

Clients are often surprised with the gentle approach of these two therapies, yet are equally surprised when they feel their body responding during treatment and how they feel after a session 💗

Today, Wednesday 19 November, is International Men’s Day – part of November being Men’s Health Awareness month 💙

I have quite a few male clients, which is great – I love their recognition of the benefit of holistic therapies and taking that time out for themselves. There can still be a lot of stigma around holistic therapies being a ‘pamper session’ for women only. This is most definitely NOT the case - we ALL deserve to feel well in ourselves 🙏

Maybe you get frequent headaches? Experience increasing tension in your neck, shoulders, etc? Find it difficult to switch off your mind, or switch off in general? Or maybe you feel you’re lacking in energy?

Holistic therapies are a great way to re-introduce balance and harmony to an otherwise stressed body and mind. Men may typically let go of tension by playing sport or going to the gym, however everything in life needs a yin to the yang – so balance is the key 💜

A lot of people say their water intake reduces during the winter months. Are you one of these people? 🤔

Our bodies are approximately 60% water (give or take variations between men and women). With over half of our body percentage is water, doesn’t it make sense to make sure we keep those levels topped up? 🙏

The benefits of being hydrated are many; a few of which are:
💚 it helps lubricate the joints;
💚 it delivers oxygen throughout the body;
💚 it can help re weight loss and controlling cravings;
💚 it boosts skin health and beauty;
💚 the digestive system depends on it (think of constipation!);
💚 it helps maintain blood pressure; and
💚 it can help our brain to function well.

So, just think of what happens to our body when we don’t maintain our water levels: it affects our brain, kidneys and digestive system; we can be more prone to UTIs; it can affect our mood, our strength and our stamina; the skin and muscle tone and our blood pressure (to name just a few) 😔

Think of your body as a car and oil in the engine is the equivalent to water in the body. If we want to drive our car, we need to make sure oil levels are sufficient. Failing to do so will cause the engine to seize. If the car engine is our body – this is what lack of water (oil) will do to our body (our engine).

Pain can present in many different ways. Often, it’s physical pain we’re most aware of, however we can go through times of emotional and mental pain, and even spiritual pain if we’re feeling out of alignment in our life 😥

Pain is our body’s way of telling us something isn’t right – and that we need to create a positive change in order to gain relief and restore wellness.

Do you listen to your body when pain presents, or do you push on through and ignore those niggles or feelings that something is out of balance?

If we ignore pain, we’re at risk of the issue becoming chronic or causing other problems as the body tries to compensate. The human body is amazing, however it can only adjust and compensate so far. We need to truly listen to the signs our body is presenting in order that we can support our health and wellbeing 💜

Taking steps to restore health and wellness needn’t be daunting. Awareness is the first step, so that’s one step taken already! Think about how you want to be feeling and then reverse engineer the steps you’d need to take in order to achieve that feeling.

There’s no hard and fast rule for freeing yourself from pain – we’re all different and our journeys will be individual too ✨

This week is Stress Awareness Week … and, in a world which often seems crazy on so many levels, it’s easy for our nerves to feel frayed and stress levels to rise 😥

In addition to events happening around us, our lives are often non-stop and, as a result, stress creeps in, which can affect our mental, emotional, and physical health.

Embrace holistic wellness by incorporating these simple practices into your routine:

🌸 Mindful Breathing: Take a few minutes to focus on your breath. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a moment, and exhale slowly. This can help centre your mind and reduce anxiety.

🧘‍♀️ Movement: Engage in gentle movement - whether it’s qigong, yoga, a walk in nature, or dancing to your favourite song. Movement releases endorphins and boosts your mood!

🍵 Nourishing Foods: Fuel your body with whole, nutrient-rich foods. Try herbal teas like chamomile or lavender to promote relaxation.

💤 Rest and Restore: Prioritise quality sleep. Create a calming bedtime routine to help your body unwind and recharge.

💖 Connect: Reach out to loved ones or friends. Sharing your thoughts and feelings can be incredibly healing.
