BHF-funded researcher Dr Angeliki Asimaki and her team are developing a non-invasive cheek swab test that can give doctors and scientists a view of the molecular changes taking place inside someone’s heart cells.

Currently, children with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) are monitored using heart scans and blood tests, but these don’t always capture microscopic changes and can be stressful.

Amazingly, these changes can be mirrored inside cheek cells. Dr Asimaki’s test enables doctors and scientists to understand what’s happening inside the heart.

It allows more accurate monitoring and helps predict the likelihood of dangerous heart rhythms, informing decisions about treatments like pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).
