Carly is currently on specialist training for health professionals with The Feeding Trust, exploring “Eating as a Learning Framework.”
Feeding is such a huge part of our OT world, yet it’s often misunderstood. Unlike other skills, we don’t always recognise eating as something that needs to be learned and developed over time.
Drawing on approaches from The Feeding Trust, this training highlights the importance of responsive, relationship-based feeding, reducing pressure, following the child’s cues, and creating positive experiences around food.
Because the reality is feeding isn’t always as instinctive as we think. It’s a complex skill involving sensory processing, gross and fine motor coordination, postural control, oral motor, cognition, communication, and emotional regulation. Just like any other occupation, children need the right support, experiences, and opportunities to build these skills.
A helpful reminder to reframe feeding not as something that should “just happen,” but as a developmental journey we can support with the same care and intention as any other skill.
