Why am I a Celebrant?

Frankly, because I care.

Every single family I am fortunate enough to meet need support. They need patience and understanding. Someone to listen whilst they reminisce about their loved one who has left them. I visit them and I listen. We look at photos so I can see the person they are describing. We then work together to create a service for their beloved.

Every single person I am honoured to conduct a service for is special in their own way. They have a life worth celebrating and remembering.

My support does not stop when the service is over. I am always here for everyone, whenever needed.

Today I had a wonderful afternoon attending the dedication service for Maldon Fields Crematorium.
So many friends and colleagues old and new.
Thank you Maldon Fields - today was a true reflection of the effort which went into building a wonderful facility for Maldon and the surrounding areas. A great achievement!

Always a pleasure working with the team at Maldon Fields Crematorium. Today I had the pleasure of working alongside Nicola to help a family celebrate the life of their loved one. Thank you for everything you do behind the scenes and front of house that makes everything run so smoothly ❤️

Today I officiated at a celebration of life service for a lady who was 103 years young. She was known for her love of owls, so it was only fitting she had a floral tribute in the shape of one. I hope she is now flying high and enjoying the sunshine 🦉

As well as being a funeral celebrant, I am also involved with care work.

This is M. I started working for her 7 years ago as an extension of herself. I was there to do the things she physically couldn't do anymore. Over the years, we have changed from employer/employee to being such good friends. I am still an extension of her, but after all this time, I know exactly what needs to be done and more importantly, the way she likes it done! M has various medical needs including MS but we always have fun together. The highlight of my week was finding a way Maureen could knit again! M has amazed herself in achieving this, as she has very limited use of her right hand and no use in her left. I am so proud of her ❤️

Before Christmas I was extremely privileged to be asked to lead a celebration of life service for a gentleman that was a member of a folk band. In the true style of his band, many of us dressed in black and red. The music choices were songs he enjoyed playing, including 'The Hole in the Elephants Bottom'. We had his musical friends play him in with live music, and a fantastic accordion player delivered a rousing rendition of 'My Fathers a Lavatory Cleaner'.
The service was filmed and is available on YouTube

This service was a wonderful example what a true celebration of life can be. Love music, unique and personal with everyone joining in. His daughter even made a beautiful floral tribute in the shape of an accordion 🪗

Permission has been given by the family to use images and video link. Service was held at Maldon Fields

I was extremely honoured today to lead the Day of Dedication service at the Woodland Glades in Maldon Cemetery. This is an annual service where the families who have buried loved ones within the last year in the Woodland Glades are invited to plant trees and bulbs which will thrive and support the wildlife in this beautiful natural burial area.

The ceremony is usually in December, but due to the storms we had on the original date, it was rescheduled for today. The trees had already been planted, so today families were invited to write messages to their loved ones on wooden shapes to hang in the trees. This was truly appreciated by many, especially by the children who joined us as they enjoyed colouring their shapes in beautiful patterns.

Thank you to the Cemeteries and Bereavement Services Department of Maldon District Council for inviting me today and for providing this service for the people of Maldon.

With so many advertisements everywhere regarding direct cremations, how do you decide what is right for you or your loved ones?
The main difference is that many of the nationwide firms offering direct cremations are purely seeing this as a business. In many cases, you would not receive the personal touch you could rely on from a local funeral director - most if not all of these offer either direct cremations or attended cremations.
So what is the difference between direct, attended or traditional cremations?
Direct cremations means no service and no-one in attendance.
Attended cremations usually means a small number of people (usually a maximum of 10) can attend the crematorium. There is no service, but sometimes music can be played or a short blessing can be given, usually by the funeral director.
Normal cremation - you can have as many people attend as the crematorium can accommodate. A choice of service - religious with a member of the clergy or a non religious/some religious elements personalised ceremony officiated by a celebrant. Adding an Order of Service, meaningful music or flowers can all add to a personal send off. More importantly, it's a time when family and friends can gather to say goodbye to their loved one and support each other in grief.
Some people who opt for a direct cremation can feel like they have not had the chance to accept the reality of the passing of their loved one. They have not had the chance to say their goodbyes. You could always have a memorial service after the cremation with friends and family so you still have the chance to grieve together. It's a very personal choice - if I can support you in anyway, I would be honoured ❤️
