With so many advertisements everywhere regarding direct cremations, how do you decide what is right for you or your loved ones?
The main difference is that many of the nationwide firms offering direct cremations are purely seeing this as a business. In many cases, you would not receive the personal touch you could rely on from a local funeral director - most if not all of these offer either direct cremations or attended cremations.
So what is the difference between direct, attended or traditional cremations?
Direct cremations means no service and no-one in attendance.
Attended cremations usually means a small number of people (usually a maximum of 10) can attend the crematorium. There is no service, but sometimes music can be played or a short blessing can be given, usually by the funeral director.
Normal cremation - you can have as many people attend as the crematorium can accommodate. A choice of service - religious with a member of the clergy or a non religious/some religious elements personalised ceremony officiated by a celebrant. Adding an Order of Service, meaningful music or flowers can all add to a personal send off. More importantly, it's a time when family and friends can gather to say goodbye to their loved one and support each other in grief.
Some people who opt for a direct cremation can feel like they have not had the chance to accept the reality of the passing of their loved one. They have not had the chance to say their goodbyes. You could always have a memorial service after the cremation with friends and family so you still have the chance to grieve together. It's a very personal choice - if I can support you in anyway, I would be honoured ❤️
