I must admit this is an almost daily occurrence with every client irrespective of whether the pony is new or I’ve met them 100 times 🙂 I am who I am 🥲

A little tip for anyone heading out to a competition or arena hire! 🐴

▫️ Stand safely (!!!) for a first attempt, begin by standing to the side and lifting the tail to ensure they aren’t going to react negatively - I’ve done this with Wizzy many times before and know him very well!
▫️ Grasp the tail firmly but gently just below the dock
▫️ Apply a steady traction (no jerking) for 15–30 seconds, then slowly release
▫️ You can repeat 2–3 times, and watch for subtle pelvic shifts or relaxation signs (licking & chewing, sigh, yawn)
▫️ DO NOT do this stretch if the horse is in any way reactive (safety first, always!) or has a known sacroiliac injury

If you have any questions or want more info, my inbox is always open 🫶🏻

As we head into the colder months, maintaining mobility and suppleness becomes even more important ❄️

A simple forelimb protraction stretch can reveal a lot - tension through the pectorals and brachiocephalicus, restrictions in shoulder joint mobility or asymmetry between sides. It helps identify where horses might be holding onto tightness before it turns into a bigger issue.

In winter when horses are moving less freely or spending more time stabled, incorporating gentle and controlled stretching into your routine can make a real difference to comfort and performance 🐴

‼️ BUT ‼️ NEVER stretch before exercise, always stretch after exercise when muscles are warm to avoid potential injury.. and always support the fetlock joint 🥰

5 reasons why movement and turnout are a non-negotiable 🐴🌿🌳

▫️ Musculoskeletal Health - Regular movement maintains joint lubrication and healthy cartilage.. without movement joints become stiff, posture weakens and the risk of compensatory tension or injury increases 🤕

▫️ Circulatory & Lymphatic Function – Gentle and consistent movement boosts circulation, which delivers vital nutrients to tissues and removes toxins.. limited movement causes fluid build up and slows tissue recovery 🩸

▫️ Digestive Health – Horses are trickle feeders! Turnout supports gut motility, acid buffering and natural grazing behaviour.. confinement increases the risk of ulcers, colic, and metabolic stress.. none of which we want! 🥕

▫️ Mental & Emotional Wellbeing – Horses are social animals and a lack of freedom and interaction leads to frustration, unwanted behaviour and reduced immune resilience 🤒

▫️ Hoof & Posture – Movement on varied terrain strengthens the digital cushion, stimulates circulation and improves proprioception.. without it, hooves weaken and balance deteriorates 🥴

Turnout and movement isn’t a luxury - it’s a biological necessity and every system in the horse’s body depends on it. Every year I see horses have more musculoskeletal issues in winter, and it’s largely due to reduced movement!

Things you can do (on top of your ridden work) to help your horse if turnout where you are is limited:

✅ REGULAR BODYWORK (this one is super important!)
✅ hand walking
✅ more hacking
✅ turnout on an all weather surface
✅ active & passive stretching plans
✅ groundwork exercises
✅ in-hand polework
… to name just a few!

If you have any concerns or need some more ideas, or if you’d like a plan tailored to your circumstances for how you can create more movement over winter - DM me and we can have a completely zero judgement chat and brain storm! 🥰📲
