We were pleased to welcome Dr Amanda Doyle OBE (National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England) to Urban Village Medical Practice today, along with NHS England colleagues Dr Paula Cowan, Keira Moulds and David Bramley.

They were joined by Professor Manisha Kumar (NHS Greater Manchester), Tom Hinchcliffe and Caroline Bradley from the Manchester locality team.

Dr Shaun Jackson, Dr Jen Greenlaw, Lead Nurse Liz Thomas and Practice Manager Kay Keane hosted the visit.

The team were particularly interested in seeing a practice with a strong neighbourhood model and a focus on community care. We shared our work on innovation, prevention and inclusive services, especially our support for people experiencing homelessness and our approach to improving access to contraception and s*xual health services for patients across Manchester.

A really positive visit and great to showcase the work our teams do every day to support our community.

North Manchester Peer Support Menopause Group has a whole host of activities in the coming months. This group was built from patients asking for something different in the community, and we are delighted that it is thriving!

If you need support from us about menopause or perimenopause do make an appointment, we have clinicians who have additional training in women's health and particularly the menopause.

HRT is a safe and effective treatment for most going through menopause and perimenopause. We can discuss any risks with you. HRT involves using oestrogen to replace your body's own levels around the time of the menopause. There are different types and doses of HRT. Using the right dose and type usually means your symptoms improve.

Oestrogen comes as:

* skin patches
* a gel or spray to put on the skin
* implants
* tablets

If you have a womb (uterus) you also need to take progesterone to protect your womb lining from the effects of oestrogen. Taking oestrogen and progesterone is called combined HRT.

Progesterone comes as:

* patches, as part of a combined patch with oestrogen
* IUS (intrauterine system, or coil)
* tablets

If you have low s*x drive because of menopause and HRT does not improve it, you may be offered testosterone.

The main benefit of HRT is that it can help relieve most menopause and perimenopause symptoms, including hot flushes, brain fog, joint pains, mood swings and vaginal dryness. Hot flushes or night sweats often improve within a few weeks. Other symptoms like mood changes and vaginal dryness can take a few months to improve. Taking HRT can also reduce your risk of hormone-related health problems including osteoporosis and heart disease.

The risks of HRT are small and usually outweighed by the benefits. Please do make an appointment with us if you would like to discuss if HRT is the right treatment for you, let us know on the request that it is to discuss menopausal symptoms and we will make sure you see the right clinician

We’re heartbroken to share that the female swan who lived on the canal beside Urban Village has sadly passed away, we understand that defrauk have been contacted to collect her.

There are fears in the community that she may have had bird flu. Avian flu, or bird flu, affects poultry and wild birds. As with other viruses, there are lots of different strains, most of which cause few or no symptoms in infected wild birds. But the recent outbreak is of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which can cause severe disease and high mortality. This strain has devastated UK wild bird populations since Summer 2021. It originated in intensive poultry operations in Asia in 1996 and then spread to wild birds.

Human infections with HPAI are rare and the risk to the public is low. Most infections are among those who have had close contact with infected birds – usually poultry workers. The advice from the rspb is not to have close contact with sick or injured birds, this includes touching infected birds, their droppings or bedding; killing or preparing infected birds for cooking; breathing in aerosols (e.g. feather dust).

We will miss her 🦢 ❤️

You don’t need to contact us and wait for an appointment a pharmacist can provide treatment or some prescription medicine, if needed, for seven common conditions - without you seeing a GP.

You don’t usually need an appointment to see the pharmacist just walk in and ask to be seen. They can give brilliant advice about many minor ailments including those below and it frees up the clinicians at the practice to see those with more complex needs

✨ Happy New Year from all of us at the practice ✨

As we welcome the year ahead, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on what has been an incredible year for our team.

Over the past year, we were proud to receive the Greater Manchester Good Employment Award, be honoured with the Cath Harmon Award for Innovation, and see three of our clinicians invited to present at three separate conferences, sharing their expertise and learning with others. We also successfully underwent our CQC inspection and retained our OUTSTANDING rating, something we are immensely proud of.

None of this would be possible without the continued dedication, professionalism, and hard work of our amazing staff. We are also extremely grateful for the ongoing support and collaboration from the services we work alongside to deliver the best possible care.

Most importantly, we would like to thank our patients for your trust, understanding, and continued support throughout the year.

We look forward to another year of working together and wish everyone a happy, healthy, and positive New Year 🎉
