🧧 Little Year (小年) – What does it mean? ✨

Little Year marks the beginning of Chinese New Year preparations. Traditionally, it’s a time to clean homes, make offerings, and say goodbye to the old year — creating space for good luck, health, and prosperity in the year ahead.
It’s a lovely reminder to pause, reset, and look forward to new beginnings with positivity and care.

It’s also when festive decorations go up and the excitement starts to build! If you’re in the city centre, this is a wonderful time to visit Chinatown, where you can experience the early celebrations, cultural traditions, and vibrant atmosphere leading up to Lunar New Year.

We wish all our patients and community a joyful start to the season and invite everyone to explore, learn, and celebrate together 🐎🧨

Another recall notice has been issued in the UK for some baby formula products over potential contamination, with food safety experts asking parents to check batches they have at home.

Food manufacturer Danone has recalled 14 more batches of Aptamil and Cow & Gate first infant and follow-on milks because a toxin called cereulide may make them unsafe for babies to drink.

The toxin can cause vomiting and stomach cramps, and 36 children in the UK are already suspected to have been affected by food poisoning.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) says parents should check the batches listed on their website and stop using them, you cna find the full list here https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/alert/fsa-prin-05-2026

Jess’s Rule is a primary care initiative to encourage GPs teams to rethink a diagnosis if a patient presents three times with the same symptoms or concerns, particularly if symptoms unexpectedly persist, escalate, or remain unexplained. It is led by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England and is supported by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).

Jessica Brady passed away due to cancer in December 2020 at the age of 27. In the 5 months leading up to her death, Jess had 20 consultations with her GP practice, and her cancer had not been diagnosed. Jess was then admitted to hospital with stage 4 adenocarcinoma and passed shortly afterwards. Since then, Jess’s family have campaigned for primary care staff to elevate a patient’s case for review after their third appointment with their practice about a condition or symptom.

*Jess’s Rule: Three Strikes and We Rethink*

If you come to see us three times with the same symptoms or concerns, especially if they continue, get worse, or have no clear explanation, it is a sign for us to take a closer look.

Reflect – We will think back over what you have told us. Has anything changed, or could something have been missed? We will make sure you get ongoing care, and if previous appointments were online, we may ask to see you in person for a full check-up.

Review – If there is still uncertainty, we may ask a colleague for their view and check for any warning signs that could suggest a different cause, no matter your age or background.

Rethink – If needed, we will arrange further tests or refer you to a specialist so you get the care you need.

Three visits are not just a number. They are a signal to pause, review carefully, and make sure nothing is overlooked.

We were pleased to welcome Dr Amanda Doyle OBE (National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England) to Urban Village Medical Practice today, along with NHS England colleagues Dr Paula Cowan, Keira Moulds and David Bramley.

They were joined by Professor Manisha Kumar (NHS Greater Manchester), Tom Hinchcliffe and Caroline Bradley from the Manchester locality team.

Dr Shaun Jackson, Dr Jen Greenlaw, Lead Nurse Liz Thomas and Practice Manager Kay Keane hosted the visit.

The team were particularly interested in seeing a practice with a strong neighbourhood model and a focus on community care. We shared our work on innovation, prevention and inclusive services, especially our support for people experiencing homelessness and our approach to improving access to contraception and s*xual health services for patients across Manchester.

A really positive visit and great to showcase the work our teams do every day to support our community.

North Manchester Peer Support Menopause Group has a whole host of activities in the coming months. This group was built from patients asking for something different in the community, and we are delighted that it is thriving!

If you need support from us about menopause or perimenopause do make an appointment, we have clinicians who have additional training in women's health and particularly the menopause.

HRT is a safe and effective treatment for most going through menopause and perimenopause. We can discuss any risks with you. HRT involves using oestrogen to replace your body's own levels around the time of the menopause. There are different types and doses of HRT. Using the right dose and type usually means your symptoms improve.

Oestrogen comes as:

* skin patches
* a gel or spray to put on the skin
* implants
* tablets

If you have a womb (uterus) you also need to take progesterone to protect your womb lining from the effects of oestrogen. Taking oestrogen and progesterone is called combined HRT.

Progesterone comes as:

* patches, as part of a combined patch with oestrogen
* IUS (intrauterine system, or coil)
* tablets

If you have low s*x drive because of menopause and HRT does not improve it, you may be offered testosterone.

The main benefit of HRT is that it can help relieve most menopause and perimenopause symptoms, including hot flushes, brain fog, joint pains, mood swings and vaginal dryness. Hot flushes or night sweats often improve within a few weeks. Other symptoms like mood changes and vaginal dryness can take a few months to improve. Taking HRT can also reduce your risk of hormone-related health problems including osteoporosis and heart disease.

The risks of HRT are small and usually outweighed by the benefits. Please do make an appointment with us if you would like to discuss if HRT is the right treatment for you, let us know on the request that it is to discuss menopausal symptoms and we will make sure you see the right clinician
