Yesterday our Practice Manager, Kay went for her routine breast screening appointment, we asked her what happened and what her advice would be to other people that get called.
*"For me it was a great experience, and to be honest I couldn't wait for my 50th birthday to join the screening programme. While I do check my chest regularly there is nothing like that additional reassurance that everything is OK.
I arrived early to make sure I'd got parking, and followed the signs to the mobile clinical unit. It was well signposted and had a ramp and steps up to it. Inside was a small reception area where they checked all my details were correct and told me what would happen. I didn't have to wait long before I was invited into the area where I would get undressed - oh and it was warm! I was worried as we had had a really cold spell.
This room felt very safe, it had two doors on it, and I was told to lock the door into the waiting area, and wait for the radiographer to call me through. It also had pictures on the wall about how to undress and what to do if I had any conditions I was worried about or if I wore religious clothing that I needed to keep on.
They were clear that I only needed to take the top clothes off, I'd gone in a skirt and top with a body underneath so I just took off my top, pulled the body down to my waist, and was ready. There was a mirror in the room too.
Then the radiographer knocked on the second door and asked me if I was ready. I was so I went through that door. She was so kind and reassuring, she explained her role and the training she had had, asked me if there was anything I was worried about, and showed me the machine. This was my second screening so I had been before and I had also refreshed myself on what would happen on the information on the NHS Website https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/breast-screening-mammogram/.
The most difficult bit wasn't the scan it was getting my position right for the 4 tests (2 on each b**b), we are all different shapes and sizes so that took a bit of manouvering to get the machine and me just right! The squeezing was uncomfortable for about 10 seconds on each picture but not painful, and they did ache a little after, but I can live with that!
Finally all done, they invited me to get my clothes back on, and that I would hear back in 2 weeks. It was easy, quick and everyone was really kind. I wouldn't hesitate going again, and would encourage everyone who is invited to attend"*
We're really grateful to Kay for sharing her experience, and she has told us she is happy to answer any questions about her experience in the comments on this post.
