Carbohydrate Periodisation

What is it and why do you need it as a footballer?

In short, higher intensity and longer duration needs more carbs so we increase for those sessions and games

Short sessions low intensity like easy head tennis games or set pieces and shape don’t need as much fuelling so we eat less carbs to keep body used to using them for high intensities

Otherwise we burn through our carbs at rest and then when we try to use them for sprints or to hold off opposition the tank is empty

Load carbs for high intensity work and games

Reduce for light sessions and rest days

Obviously more complex than that based on schedule so dm me ‘CP’ and can show you how to build a structure to keep you efficient and effective

Post-Match or heavy session we want to start our recovery process as soon as possible

Chocolate milk works for a list of reasons:

- Protein to start repairing damages made to muscles
- Carbs to help refuel the stores we’ve just used
- Carbs to Protein ratio optimal naturally
- A fluid and electrolytes to help rehydrate
- Tastes good and easy to consume even with low appetite
- Allows us to take something on in the first hour where food might not make sense with team talks, showers, interviews etc.
- Pretty easy to get from most places

Don’t forget to add this into your post-match strategy to make sure your body recovers as well as it performs 💪🏾

Throughout my career I had:

- Great Seasons
- Good Seasons
- Average Seasons
- Poor Seasons
- Injured Seasons

The one constant was that in the off-season it was time to get the work in and that work needed support from my nutrition to give the best outcomes

I’ve got clients playing at all different levels and in different stages of their career from youth players, players making debuts, established pros and internationals and those trying to extend their career as long as they can

All of those clients will be getting the work in over the summer

The difference between them and you right now is that their work will be backed with nutrition to make sure they don’t leave any improvements on the table

Don’t lose a percentage of your gains through something as simple as not having a nutrition structure in place

A day every player thinks will never come - I’m hanging them up

Over half my life been my job to play this game and it’s been a pleasure

Teammates, opposition, fans, staff and of course the support from friends and family all part of the journey

Onto new adventures and challenges 👀

FUEL FOR THE BENCH ⚽️🚨⛽️

Will keep repeating this until the message sinks in!

A common question - what can I have on the bench to keep me ready to go and impact the game with my tank topped up

Things we want:

- quick fuel source (easy digesting carbs)
- light on stomach
- easy transportable
- enjoyable

Really we want it to be like a perfect sub - ready to go and have a big impact in a small amount of time

Season well underway and games thick and fast there’s a good chance you’ll see the bench with rotations
