Carbohydrate Periodisation
What is it and why do you need it as a footballer?
In short, higher intensity and longer duration needs more carbs so we increase for those sessions and games
Short sessions low intensity like easy head tennis games or set pieces and shape don’t need as much fuelling so we eat less carbs to keep body used to using them for high intensities
Otherwise we burn through our carbs at rest and then when we try to use them for sprints or to hold off opposition the tank is empty
Load carbs for high intensity work and games
Reduce for light sessions and rest days
