On Sunday 7th September at 3pm, the UK Government will be carrying out a test of the National Emergency Alert system. Phones and tablets connected to 4G/5G will emit a loud siren-like sound and display a message, even if the device is on silent.

We are aware this test could pose a risk to individuals experiencing domestic abuse, particularly those who may have hidden or secret phones.

If there is a need to turn the alert off, below is guidance – this should only be done where absolutely required for safety reasons.

🔕 How to Turn Off Emergency Alerts on a Mobile Phone

📱 For iPhones (iOS 15.6 or later):
Go to Settings
Tap Notifications
Scroll to the bottom to find Emergency Alerts
Toggle Extreme Alerts and Severe Alerts off

📱 For Android phones (varies slightly by model):
Go to Settings
Tap Notifications or Apps & Notifications
Tap Advanced or More Settings
Tap Emergency Alerts or Wireless Emergency Alerts
Toggle off Severe Alerts and Extreme Alerts
👉 On some Android devices, you may need to go to:
Settings > Safety & emergency > Wireless emergency alerts

📌 Important: Disabling alerts may reduce awareness of future emergencies. This should only be done if safety is at risk – for example, to avoid revealing a hidden phone.
