January can often be a challenging month, with the anticlimax of the holidays and the cold and rain of winter!
Action for Happiness offer some good ideas of ways we can make January a bit more palatableđź’›

How does helping others make you feel?
Did you know that altruism activates the midbrain which releases dopamine, a chemical hormone that increases our feeling of pleasurable reward and motivation, so helping others can increase our feeling of happinessđź’›

Be kind to you❤️

“If the mountain seems too big today then climb a hill instead. If the morning brings you sadness it’s okay to stay in bed. If the day ahead weighs heavy and your plans feel like a curse, there’s no shame in rearranging; don’t make yourself feel worse. If a shower stings like needles and a bath feels like you’ll drown, if you haven’t washed your hair for days don’t throw away your crown. A day is not a lifetime, a rest is not defeat. Don’t think of it as failure, just a quiet, kind retreat. It’s okay to take a moment from an anxious, fractured mind. The world will not stop turning while you get realigned. The mountain will still be there when you want to try again. You can climb it in your own time. Just love yourself till then.”

Does surrounding yourself with nature improve your mood?
It certainly does give me a sense of well-being - just being able to breathe in that fresh woodland air this morning, listen to the birdsong,
watch with amusement my dog interacting with others, feel the ground solid underneath my feet,
look up at the trees overhead the light filtering through their branches….wonderful!💛

Do you find that you always need to be doing something? What if you’re tired, feeling anxious or low or generally having a bad day?
Can you allow yourself to stop and rest? Can you let go of any feeling of guilt about simply relaxing in this moment, permitting any “shoulds” to fall away, just making time for you💚

“The mind and body are not separate, what affects one affects the other”
For example, take Joe* - Joe broke his leg as he was looking at his phone while walking and fell down a pothole. He had an operation and needed to spend two months off work while his leg healed.
During that time Joe suffered with guilt at what he’d done which brought on low mood and then anxiety about returning to work, feeling that he would need to justify himself to his boss, and worrying that the company may take his sick pay away, meaning he couldn’t pay his rent, or even worse lose his job, as he’d not been working there very long, and the pain in Joe’s leg was awful.
Sometimes people can make a distinction between the physical and the emotional, giving physical problems more legitimacy then feelings subtle stigma around mental health, but from the very brief example it is clear to see that they are both totally intertwinedđź’›

“The wound is the place where the light enters you” Rumi (13th Century scholar)
Is it possible for us to attune ourselves by delving into our own hearts and minds and discovering that spark within each of us, that quiet voice that can acknowledge what’s happened today, and make space for whatever will happen tomorrow?💛
