I have decided to put out my own little rant about juice plus since I've noticed a few people advertising on Facebook. Before I start, please know that I am fully 100% against the company and products.
Juice plus+
I'll start off by saying that they are a pyramid scheme but that is besides the point, the things that annoy me most about juice plus is there range of products that are meant to promote healthy living wether that is with the bu****it "5 a day capsules" or the horrific "shape" range that offers weight loss through meal replacement.
I'll start with the "5 a day capsules"
Any company that promotes eating a capsule instead of eating REAL FOOD deserves burning to the floor, there is no replacement for actual food. Any company that squishes your "5 a day" into a pill Instead of educating you on how and what to eat properly and healthily should frankly be closed down. Enough said.
Now onto the "shape" range
Here are the ingredients in there chocolate flavoured "shape" meal replacement shake.
Soy protein, fructose, inulin, rapeseed oil powder (rapeseed oil, maltodextrin), flavours, algae oil powder (glucose syrup, algae oil, modified starch, sodium ascorbate, sodium polyphosphate, sunflower oil, tri-calcium phosphate, emulsifiers: sunflower lecithin and mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids; natural flavouring, antioxidants: tocopherol-rich extracts and ascorbyl palmitate), soybean oil powder (soybean oil, maltodextrin), pea protein, lupin protein, thickener: guar gum; strawberry pieces (1%), beta-glucan yeast concentrate, mineral blend (calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, potassium citrate, sodium chloride, ferric pyrophosphate, zinc sulphate, copper sulphate, manganese chloride, potassium iodide, sodium selenite), anticaking agent: silicon dioxide; beetroot juice powder (beetroot juice concentrate, maltodextrin, acidity regulator: citric acid), acidity regulator: citric acid; glucose syrup, vitamin mix (vitamin C, niacin, vitamin E, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B1, vitamin A, vitamin B2, biotin, folic acid, vitamin D, vitamin B12).
Ok so start by thinking to yourself how many of those products you actually know or can even read and then think would you randomly but any of these off a shelf at your local supermarket and put it into your home made soup or casserole? The meal replacement shakes are basically a calorie restriction, anyone can lose weight when restricting calories, I can lose weight eating MARS BARS as long as I don't eat over my calorie baseline and I would probably get more nutrition out of a mars bar too.
So what happens when you eat a calorie controlled diet?
For all you people who have an interest in this... When you restrict calories to a low enough point your body goes into a starvation mode, once in this state your body will prioritise the storage of fat so you don't die (it's literally a survival instinct to stop you dying). This also means that you will then store fat very easily so once you come off your shakes (as they are NOT a long term solution) you will store fat like a machine and then end back up at square 1 and wondering what you did wrong.
Feel fat > buy shakes > lose weight > revert back to normal eating > store fat > feel fat > buy shakes.
Following this pattern means eventually your body will struggle to lose fat, you will ruin your metabolism and crush your thyroid.
The reason you buy these shakes is because it is a quick fix and they are normally sold to you by someone you trust... A family member?... A friend?... A personal trainer? Well you have been well and truly fu**ed over.
