Camouflaging also known as masking may represent a significant barrier to autism diagnosis, yet its role in clinical assessment remains underexplored.

Findings from a mixed-methods study of autistic adults and clinicians indicate broad agreement that camouflaging influences adult autism assessments. While most clinicians report routinely considering camouflaging, fewer autistic adults recall being explicitly asked about it.

Qualitative insights suggest camouflaging shapes diagnostic interpretation, affects self-understanding, and may contribute to the under-recognition of autistic traits by others.

These findings highlight the need for more explicit and systematic consideration of camouflaging within adult autism assessments, alongside greater integration of autistic perspectives to inform clinical practice.

A new study (n=795; ages 4โ€“17) examined the mechanisms underlying Extreme Demand Avoidance (EDA) across autistic and neurotypical populations.

Findings indicate that anxiety and autism traits are positively associated with EDA behaviours across all groups. Notably, sensory reactivity, specifically sensory sensitivity and sensory seeking, uniquely characterised EDA in the autism + PDA group. In contrast, intolerance of uncertainty was associated with EDA only in neurotypical children, and not in autistic children without PDA.

These results suggest that heightened sensory reactivity may be a key mechanism underpinning demand avoidance in PDA, with implications for developing targeted, strengths-based and sensory-informed intervention approaches.

To mark Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2026 earlier in March, Buro Happold has published a new white paper on sensory mapping, exploring how clearer sensory information about spaces can reduce anxiety, improve predictability and support more neuro-inclusive environments.

Sensory mapping white paper from Buro Happold shows how maps can reduce anxiety and support more neuro-inclusive experiences.

New research shows that social camouflaging isnโ€™t limited to autism.
In a study of 202 adults with ADHD, 91.6% reported masking their ADHD traits to fit in, avoid stigma, and navigate a neurotypical world. While camouflaging may help social outcomes, it often leads to exhaustion, identity disturbance, and mental health challenges.

The release of the Schools White Paper โ€˜Every Child Achieving and Thrivingโ€™ has prompted significant discussion across the SEND community.

In her latest Thoughts from a Therapist blog, Anna Willis of Active Play Therapies shares an honest and heartfelt reflection on what this could mean for children with SENDโ€”and the families supporting them every day.

๐Ÿ’ญ โ€œThe answer is to change schools to meet children where they are now.โ€

If youโ€™re a professional working in the SEND community, this blog really speaks to what so many are feeling right now ๐Ÿ’›

In this new study which investigated actual and perceived motor competency in children aged 7โ€“9 years, children with both low motor skills and low confidence were the least active and least fit. But kids with low motor skills who felt confident were just as active as their peers event though their fitness was still lower.

The findings suggests that boosting children's confidence in their movement abilities could help keep them active, especially for those at risk of developmental coordination challenges. Interventions that build both skill and confidence may be key to supporting healthy physical development.
