⚠️ What NOT to put on a burn ⚠️

Staff from our Children's Emergency Department share some dos and don'ts when it comes to burns.

Do:
✅ Run cool (not cold) water over the burn for at least 20 minutes
✅ Remove any clothing or jewellery that's near the burnt area of skin
✅ Raise the affected area if possible

In case you missed it...we were delighted to be able to share this amazing story of us delivering a UK first clinical breakthrough.
We've treated Oscar with innovative CAR-T therapy for his aggressive blood cancer. We've worked with partners at University College London on this trial and saw really successful results which enabled the treatment to be approved for use on the NHS in November and we were the first to use the treatment.
We were delighted to have the BBC come to film the moment and speak to Consultant Haematologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Dr Eleni Tholouli, and Oscar 👀📺

🏥 We were pleased to welcome Royal College of Emergency Medicine President, Dr Ian Higginson, to MFT this week.

At North Manchester, he saw how our A&E teams are improving patient flow - including our pioneering rapid ambulance handover system and quicker early assessment at the front door.

Ian then visited Oxford Road to learn more about Project RED and our plans to improve urgent and emergency care for our communities. 💙

Lots in the headlines today about how waiting lists are being reduced. One way we're reducing waiting lists is with our elective surgery hub in Trafford which is dedicated to day surgery and does 250 surgeries a week on joint replacements, hernia operations, children’s dental surgery, as well as a range of gynaecological surgery, ear nose and throat surgery and more 🦵

The hub plays a key role in reducing waiting times, as being separated from emergency services and exclusively performing planned surgeries means they can deliver operations quicker and more effectively.

We had BBC North West in today to look at all the work the team are doing and also give them a special look at our pioneering robotic surgery 🎥

Here's Dr Jamdar, surgeon, and Clinical lead, Greg Cook, chatting to the BBC 🗣️

In 2025, our new digital booking system, FastPass, has provided 18,000 earlier appointments and helped 6,000 patients reschedule their own appointments. This reduces waiting times, results in fewer missed appointments and frees up staff time.

We’re proud to be driving digital innovation to make our services more efficient, more flexible and get patients seen quicker.

MyMFT is our patient portal. If you have MyMFT, you can register for FastPass. Find out more on our website: https://mft.nhs.uk/mymft/

Clinical breakthrough 🧬
We've delivered a UK first NHS treatment to a patient with an aggressive blood cancer.
Oscar, 28 from Bury, has been treated by specialists at Manchester Royal Infirmary with an innovative new therapy that showed great success in trials we were part of.
🗣️Oscar said:“I’ve had great support around me from my fiancé, my family and the staff here at MRI. My consultant, Eleni, has explained the treatment to me and the success they’ve had in trials so I’ve a lot of hope in this innovative new treatment and it feels surreal to be the first person to be treated with this since becoming accessible to patients on the NHS.”

🗣️Our Joint Chief Medical Office, Dr Sohail Munshi, said: “I’m incredibly proud to see Manchester being involved in such a clinical breakthrough, with research partners across the UK. A lot of work goes into trials from clinicians and patients, which is vital to ensuring that the work taking place on lab benches right now, is providing care and cures at the bedside tomorrow.”

Let's leave 19th century diseases in the past, where they belong 🦠

Measles can be dangerous. But the more people that get vaccinated, the less likely it is to spread.

Unlike the Victorians, we have the free, effective and safe MMR vaccine: https://www.manchester.gov.uk/measles

📍A major sustainability milestone at Trafford General Hospital—the birthplace of the NHS.

Today our Chair, Kathy Cowell, and Chief Delivery Officer, Vanessa Gardener, visited site to see the removal of the large industrial boilers as part of our ongoing decarbonisation works.
This pioneering £20 million programme will make Trafford the first inpatient hospital in the UK to replace a fossil‑fuel heating system with a retro-fitted carbon‑zero alternative—cutting energy‑related emissions by over 90%.

A huge thank you to our estates and facilities teams and partners driving this complex project forward. This is a significant step towards a greener, more resilient NHS for our patients, colleagues and communities..💚

Skin cancer doesn’t hibernate! ❄️

Remember to check your skin even in winter.

If you notice any changes to the size, shape or colour of your moles, have a mole that’s crusty, bleeding or inflamed, itchy or painful, or new unusual marks on your skin that don’t go away after a few weeks, then your GP wants to see you.

Don’t wait until summer - get it checked now.

🎥 24 hours NOT in A&E.

When you need help, A&E might seem like the obvious choice. But there are many ways to get NHS help for non-emergencies that work around your life.

Get the right care, in the right place, at the right time – and help free-up emergency services for those who need them most this winter.
