😴 Could you have sleep apnoea? 😴

Around 8 million people in the UK may have sleep apnoea, but many don't realise it.

Sleep apnoea is a serious disorder where your breathing stops and starts while you sleep. In the most severe cases, people can stop breathing every minute for more than 10 seconds at a time.

Undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnoea can reduce your life expectancy by a decade and lead to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Hear from our Sleep Service staff who share some common symptoms - and what you should do if you think you may have sleep apnoea.

Did you catch Ian and Graham on BBC Breakfast yesterday?

Graham was 82 when he donated his kidney to his son-in-law Ian, making him the oldest male living donor we’ve had at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

One of our transplant surgeons, Giuseppe Giuffrida, joined them on the sofa to talk about how age is no barrier to being a living donor and the impact of Graham's gift.

“He has done not just a marvellous thing for Ian, but not everyone has the luck to have a living donor, so in donating to Ian he has made one more kidney available to the general pool for the people who don't have a living donor. So he has made a massive gift to a patient with kidney disease.” 💙

If you feel inspired by Graham and Ian's story, it takes just two minutes to confirm your decision to become an organ donor. Visit organdonation.nhs.uk or the NHS App today.

“Without my father-in-law, I would have died within a matter of months.”

At 84 years old, Graham made the incredible decision to donate his kidney to save his son‑in‑law Ian’s life - becoming Manchester Royal Infirmary's oldest-ever donor. 🩵

Thanks to the skill and dedication of the hospital's renal transplant team, the procedure was a success and both Graham and Ian have made a full recovery. Graham’s selfless gift has meant Ian’s life has been completely transformed.

Like many people, Ian assumed Graham would have been too old to donate. In reality, organ donations can be made by people of all ages, genders and ethnicities - what matters most is medical suitability.

📢 One person dies every day waiting for a transplant. It takes just two minutes to confirm your decision to become an organ donor. Visit organdonation.nhs.uk or the NHS App.

Five-time Olympic cycling champion Dame Laura Kenny appeared on BBC Breakfast today, calling for improved support and greater societal acceptance of breastfeeding.

Laura visited a breastfeeding support session run by our Trafford Local Care Organisation, where she met with new mums and spoke to our fantastic infant feeding coordinators. Our breastfeeding support drop-in sessions provide a relaxed and welcoming space for parents to meet, get advice and share stories. A huge thank you to Laura for shining a light on how important these sessions are.

We've been announced as one of 15 pilot assessment and recovery centres (ARC), where selected donated organs will be preserved and assessed so more can be transplanted.

The pilot trials creating regional hubs specialising in organ perfusion, where oxygenated blood or nutrient-rich fluids are circulated through organs, preserving their function, which means that more organs are available for donation to people on the transplant waiting list.

We've been at the forefront of transplant work for over 40 years and we're delivering lots of transplants across our sites. At our heart and lung transplant centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, we've completed over 1,500 life-saving operations! 🫀🫁
