After 6-12 months of renovations, our attempt to own and manage a holiday home sadly ended in failure…
At the eleventh hour - despite receiving approval to rent the property from the Maltese Tourism Authority - we were denied by a ruling that precludes British citizens from receiving a VAT number (following Brexit, only EU citizens are entitled to one).
This meant our only options were to (1) put the home up for sale, or (2) outsource management to a Maltese-based company, which along with taxes, would have decimated our monthly profits.
And so we begrudgingly opted to sell the home, which for both personal and professional reasons, was a particularly bitter pill to swallow.
What we’d dreamt would become a successful holiday rental and ‘home away from home’ for our family and friends, turned into a bureaucratic nightmare that in hindsight seemed destined for failure from the start...
But as scars replace wounds, despite the time and money we’ve lost on the project, we’re optimistic that the void is in fact a doorway to better and brighter opportunities.
Anyway, thought we’d post some pictures of what might have been, as until recently, we couldn’t even bring ourselves to look at the finished photo’s...
