It’s been a week since the BMUS ‘Delivering Compassionate Care in Ultrasound’ and ‘Gynaecology’ study days in London, and we’re reflecting on the insightful conversations we had with so many of you – thanks to anyone who visited our stand.

The specialities covered across the two days were incredibly enlightening and we here at Atlas were delighted to see these areas get the attention they deserve.

🌸This March, the UK - along with many other countries - recognises Placenta Health Awareness Month, highlighting the vital role the placenta plays in pregnancy and the wellbeing of both mother and baby.

Our Atlas clinicians perform ultrasound scans for pregnant women every single day, and we’re proud to join healthcare partners and organisations in raising awareness of this incredibly important topic.

Understanding placenta health can support early detection of complications and empower women with the knowledge they need throughout their pregnancy journey.

Women's History Month👩‍⚕️

Shining a light on some incredible women in history who devoted their lives to medical science and the development of Radiology🩻👇

Marie Curie - A physicist and chemist whose pioneering research on radioactivity earned her two Nobel Prizes in different scientific fields. During World War I, Curie developed and deployed the first mobile X‑ray units, enabling frontline medical teams to diagnose injuries more quickly and accurately.

Lise Meitner - Her work contributed to the discovery of protactinium‑231 and led to the explanation of nuclear fission. She earned her physics doctorate in 1906 - only the second woman to do so - and became Germany’s first female professor of physics in 1926.

Irene Joliot-Curie - Her research on natural and artificial radioactivity helped transform modern nuclear science.She worked as a nurse radiographer with her mother during WWI, teaching doctors to use X‑ray equipment to locate shrapnel. Together with her husband, she discovered that radioactive elements can be artificially created from stable ones - earning them a Nobel Prize.

Edith Quimby - Established safe radiation dosing and helped found the field of nuclear medicine. She advanced the clinical use of radioactive isotopes, co‑founded Columbia’s Radiological Research Laboratory, and played a key role in shaping modern medical physics.

Rosalind Franklin - A chemist and X‑ray crystallographer. Her work - specifically her image Photo 51 - was the foundation of Watson and Crick’s discovery that the structure of DNA was a double-helix polymer, for which she was not cited or credited.

Chien-Shiung Wu - Played an important role in the advancement of nuclear and particle physics. Her research at the Substitute Alloy Materials Lab improved Geiger counters for radiation detection.

Tikvah Alper - A renowned radiobiologist and physicist whose groundbreaking research on Scrapie demonstrated that its infectious agent could replicate without nucleic acids - a discovery that reshaped scientific understanding of diseases such as mad cow disease and kuru.
