Highlighting National Brain Day with this post about migraine and the kinds of support people need. To this I would add that support and understanding of personal experiences of migraine, and finding ways to manage can be helped with psychotherapy.

Today is , a day to remember the importance of a healthy brain for our mental, social and physical wellbeing. What do you think needs to change to ensure good brain health for all people with migraine? 🧠

Migraine is often a hidden disease and reason for both physical and psychological struggling. The ability to enjoy life can be taken away, but sometimes its true impact is hidden.

Has anyone ever accused you of faking having a as an excuse to get out of obligations?

So many factors contribute to this- is primarily an ; it primarily affects women; it carries a stigma so pervasive that people truly don't grasp the severity. People living with migraine aren't making excuses to get out of obligations. We want to work. We want to spend time with our friends and family. We want to live.

Migraine is the most common and it’s the 2nd leading cause of disability worldwide. Every time you dismiss a coworker’s “excuse”, you're hurting the billion(!) people living with this illness. 90% of people can't function normally through a migraine attack. An attack often forces us to lie down in dark, silent rooms for hours or longer to manage our nausea, pain, cognitive dysfunction, and more. We would never dare lie about it or use it as an excuse.

We don’t fake being sick. In fact, many of us fake being well. Society is so dismissive of migraine disease that many of us are ashamed to admit to an attack. Just 42% of people calling out of work for a migraine attack tell their supervisors the truth due to fears of judgement or disbelief. This concern can be valid- just 22% of employees report that migraine is a serious enough reason to miss work.

This keeps migraine underresearched, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. The good news? We can fight this. Every time we share our story and educate others about migraine, we chip away at the stigma. We can't hide in this undeserved shame. Our is strong and together, we will shatter this stigma.

How do you respond when people accuse you of faking? How do you advocate for yourself and for the community?

Managing and coping with migraine is about so much more than physical pain. Here anxiety and depression are highlighted.

Managing and coping with migraine is about so much more than physical pain. Here anxiety and depression are highlighted.

Depression, anxiety, and migraine- a terrible trio.

Why do so many people living with migraine also experience mood disorders?

The most obvious connection is that living with chronic pain and illness can be devastating. Having to try to plan your life around uncertain and unreliable symptoms can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety.

However, this is likely not the full answer. Dr. Noah Rosen explains how it may come down to how our brains are wired, and how our deep limbic structures play a huge role in the processing of both physical pain and emotions. If these areas of the brain are not properly functioning, a person may start experiencing both mental illnesses and chronic pain.

How do you feel about these theories? What has helped you manage both chronic pain, migraine disease, and mental health conditions?

There’s a growing realisation that pain can be a disease in and of itself – and the pandemic could be making it worse

Psychotherapy and Counselling Online during COVID-19

My name is Liz Jeffries and I offer psychotherapy and counselling services for individuals and couples in Chorlton, South Manchester. I also offer online therapy for individuals. I am an accredited member of the National Counselling Society (NCS) and a Certified Cyber Therapist.

Through my ‘Steps to Therapy’ service I also offer therapeutic support services to help with anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. Specialist psychological support for migraine is also available

While social distancing is in place to protect us all I am offering online therapy only, but with greater flexibility for hours and days. Please contact me with queries and questions to see if online therapy might work for you. I trained in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy initially. I also trained in relational psychotherapy - an approach which believes in the centrality of the therapeutic relationship as the significant agent for change and successful therapy. I have also trained in working with couples and online therapy.

All of these trainings contribute to my passion about psychotherapy and counselling, and the opportunities they present for feeling better, exploring change and for resolving personal issues and difficulties in life.
