When we’re faced with relentless bad news, it significantly disrupts our capacity for hope. In fact, if you were feeling particularly hopeless, you might go so far as to ask whether we are living in a post-hope world – how can we hope, in this landscape of endless headlines depicting human and environmental suffering on an untold scale?

To mark World Mental Health Day on October 10 therapist Cora Hilton encourages us to hang on to our feelings of hope, to avoid being overwhelmed by global events and relentless bad news

We are often our harshest critics. In a world that is already so hard, let's take a moment to be gentle with ourselves. We deserve kindness and understanding, just as we extend it to others. Remember, self-compassion is crucial for our well-being. Together, we can learn to navigate life's challenges with greater self-compassion. 💖

A common block when working on people pleasing is the feeling of threat and discomfort that arises when considering your own needs. This is absolutely natural for reasons that could lie within anything from please and appease being a condition of worth, activated shame, a lack of space for needs being met in childhood, a safety strategy based in trauma, or simply the fact it feels totally uncomfortable shifting from a lifetime habitual way of being. Uncertainty of outcome is interpreted as a threat. Maybe we will be rejected. Maybe others will think we're bad or selfish. Maybe there could be conflict?

Under the fluffy term, people pleasing is far more complex. It's ok to struggle when it comes to working on a healthier balance for you.

Warmly, Karen.
