Dogwood Referrals were proud to be part of Rita’s journey 💙

This lovely little Dachshund was treated for a slipped disc (IVDD), and as you’ll see in the video… she’s doing incredibly well 🌟

We’re sharing this to help raise awareness and remind owners how important early, specialist care can be for dogs like Rita.

If you know a Dachshund owner, please do share this — it could make all the difference 🐾

🐾 Meet Rita, the determined Dachshund who’s back on her paws again.

When Rita wasn't her usual self and was struggling to move, her owner, Mat, took her to Medivet Chorley, who quickly referred her to the specialist team at Medivet Dogwood Referrals.

Thanks to the specialist care at Dogwood, Rita is back to her best.

Y-oh-Y… these are the fractures that test everything 🤯🐾

Last week we had the pleasure of seeing Alfie back at Dogwood Referrals, eight weeks after being referred by his own vet’s with a severe and complex elbow injury… a “Y-fracture”, named for the way the bone splits into multiple segments.

Among orthopaedic surgeons, these are widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding fractures to repair.

Not because of one challenge… but because of all of them at once:

🔹 The fracture extends into the joint → alignment must be absolutely perfect
🔹 The bone is split into multiple fragments → each must be reconstructed precisely
🔹 Three bones of the elbow must be realigned together in harmony
🔹 Critical nerves and arteries lie directly within the surgical field
🔹 Stability is hard-earned → requiring multiple implants working together under load

It’s a procedure where millimetres matter, decisions stack quickly, and there is very little margin for error.

This is exactly where specialist orthopaedic expertise comes into its own.

Alfie’s surgery was challenging from start to finish, but his post-operative X-rays confirmed that everything was reconstructed and stabilised as planned 🙌

Fast forward eight weeks, and thanks to an incredible effort from his owners keeping him calm during recovery, Alfie is now walking brilliantly and well on his way to running free again this spring 🌿🐕💨

A fantastic outcome from a truly demanding injury.

Huge thanks to Torkington Park Vets for the referral 🤝

And finally… Alfie’s owners very kindly brought gifts for our surgeon Tom 🍷🎣
(A bottle of red wine and a fishing handbook… clearly they were paying attention 😂)

Archie, a spaniel, arrived non-weight bearing on his right forelimb.
X-rays confirmed an elbow fracture through a Humeral Intracondylar Fissure (HIF) — a condition we see commonly in spaniels.
Using a plate, multiple screws, and a transcondylar screw, we stabilised the fracture from the inside out.
Thanks to careful post-op care and his family’s dedication, Archie has made a full recovery and is back to doing what spaniels do best — running, exploring, and enjoying life!

Cassie was referred to us by Crosby for ongoing hip pain. Radiographs confirmed bilateral hip dysplasia with secondary osteoarthritis.

Following discussion with her owner, we proceeded with a left Total Hip Replacement – the gold standard treatment for hip disease where medical management has failed.

We’re delighted to see Cassie comfortably weight-bearing on her left hindlimb following recovery. Her right hip will be addressed later this year.

🌟 Dogwood Star(s) of the Week 🌟

Marley 🐾 & Peanut 🐾

Working alongside our referring vets to restore stability, comfort and confidence.

Just before Christmas, Marley and Peanut were both referred to Dogwood Referrals on the same day… with the same diagnosis.

Hip dislocation. 🦴

As an orthopaedic and neurosurgery centre, we see a high volume of complex orthopaedic cases. Even so, hip dislocations are relatively uncommon. Two in one day was certainly memorable.

🦴 Educational Insight

Hip stability in dogs depends on three key structures:

🔹 Joint capsule
🔹 Acetabular rim
🔹 Ligament of the head of the femur

If two of these three structures fail, the hip will dislocate.

Management options include:

✨ Closed reduction (non-surgical)
✨ Open surgical stabilisation

For both Marley and Peanut, surgical stabilisation using a hip toggle technique was indicated.

This procedure recreates the function of the damaged ligament by placing a toggle within the pelvis, passing a high-strength fibre through a drill tunnel in the femur, and securing it externally with a button. It is a technically precise procedure designed to restore joint stability and allow predictable healing.

Eight weeks later, both patients are back on their feet and progressing beautifully. 🐕✨

Outcomes like this are only possible through early recognition, timely referral, and strong communication between practices.

Thank you to the referring teams for trusting us with Marley and Peanut’s care. We are proud to work in partnership to achieve the best possible outcomes for our shared patients.

Well done Marley and Peanut — true stars ⭐

Two referrals. Same day. Same diagnosis.

Hip dislocation is relatively uncommon, but when two key stabilising structures fail, the hip becomes unstable and painful.

Both Marley and Peanut underwent surgical stabilisation using a hip toggle technique to recreate the function of the damaged ligament and restore joint stability.

Eight weeks later — both are back on all four paws and progressing beautifully.

Thank you to our referring teams for your trust and collaboration. Early recognition and strong partnership make outcomes like this possible.

Maggie first came to Dogwood Referrals with a fissure in her right elbow (a humeral intracondylar fissure), which was stabilised with a screw.

Six months later, she returned… this time lame on her left forelimb. With her head lifting as the left foot hit the ground, we were suspicious of the same condition affecting the opposite elbow.

A CT scan confirmed it: a left-sided HIF.

Maggie was promptly treated with a 4.5mm screw placed across the left elbow, using patient-specific guides from our friends at Fusion Implants.

And just six weeks later… Maggie is happier than ever and ready to return to normal exercise 🐕💙

Well done, Maggie.
Another great example of specialist-led care and teamwork changing outcomes. 💪

⭐ Dogwood Referrals Star of the Week: Pixie ⭐

Meet Pixie 💙
Adopted with multiple challenges, one was immediately clear, a very painful limp associated with her right hip joint.

Pixie was referred to Dogwood Referrals by Vets4Pets Stockport where assessment confirmed avascular necrosis of the femoral head and neck (Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease). This hereditary condition causes progressive destruction of the hip joint and significant pain.

In cases like Pixie’s, surgery offers the best outcome, with Total Hip Replacement considered the gold-standard treatment. This specialist procedure replaces both the femoral head and pelvic socket, restoring comfort and function.

Pixie’s surgery went smoothly, and her recovery has been a joy to watch. At her 8-week check, she was walking confidently and pain-free, something she’d never experienced before.

Well done, Pixie 🐾
And thank you to Vets4Pets Stockport for being part of our referral community 💙
