From unable to walk… to back on all fours 💙

Meet Fred, a cheeky pup 🐶 referred to Dogwood Referrals by Medivet Ashton 24 hour 🤝 after an accident left him unable to weight-bear on his left hindlimb.

Clinical examination and X-rays 🩻 confirmed a femoral neck fracture — a challenging injury due to its location within the hip joint.

Expert insight 🧠
Proximal femoral fractures are classified as intra-capsular or extra-capsular. This distinction relates to the blood supply to the femoral head and can help guide prognosis, with intra-capsular fractures generally carrying a higher risk of complications.

Fred underwent specialist surgical repair 🦴, with careful realignment of the fracture and stabilisation using two pins. Following six weeks of strict rest ⏳, his follow-up X-rays showed excellent healing ✨

Fred has now been given the all-clear ✅ and is back to enjoying life exactly as a young dog should 🐾

Meet Fred 💙
This cheeky pup was referred to Dogwood Referrals by Medivet Ashton after an accident left him unable to weight-bear on his left hindlimb.

Examination and X-rays confirmed a femoral neck fracture — a challenging injury due to its location within the hip joint.

Our specialist surgeon carefully realigned the fracture and stabilised it using two pins. After six weeks of strict rest (which Fred clearly loved 😅), his follow-up X-rays showed excellent healing.

Fred has now been given the all-clear to return to full activity and is back to enjoying life on four paws 🐾

It’s that time of year when we gather with family to enjoy festive cheer – the excitement of presents, films on the TV, and the moment the Babycham comes out and Nannie makes a snowball in the special guest-only glassware 🎄🥂

Amid the excitement and chaos, our furry friends are hard at work too:
• conducting the annual “if it drops from the table, it’s fair game” patrol
• offering unsolicited “quality control” by sticking their heads into every newly opened gift
• and snuggling up warm for a festive film in the evening 🐾✨

So from our furry friends to yours, and from everyone at Dogwood Referrals to all of our clients, referring vets and friends, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hector the Dachshund was referred as an emergency after suddenly losing the use of his back legs.

On assessment, Hector was paraplegic with loss of conscious pain sensation — a Grade 5 spinal emergency. An urgent MRI confirmed a severe disc extrusion compressing over 90% of his spinal cord.

Hector underwent emergency spinal surgery, followed by intensive rehabilitation with our ACPAT physiotherapists.

Just two weeks later, he’s walking again with only mild deficits — and back to being his cheeky self ❤️

🌟 Patient of the Week: Hector 🌟

Everyone, meet the adorable Hector! 🐶💙
He was referred to Dogwood Referrals as an emergency eight weeks ago after fracturing his right elbow.

A CT scan revealed not just the fracture, but also a crack in his left elbow — a condition called Humeral Intracondylar Fissure, which was actually the underlying cause of the original break.

Fast forward eight weeks and Hector’s right elbow had healed beautifully 👏
But we still needed to address the crack in the left elbow to minimise the risk of a second fracture.

So, we teamed up with our friends at Fusion Implants, who created a bespoke, Hector-specific guide to help us place a 4.5 mm screw precisely across the bone. Thanks to this, surgery went smoothly and safely.

We’re delighted to say Hector was discharged as a very happy spaniel, now resting up before joining in on the legendary Boxing Day Spaniel Walk! 🐾🎄

🐾 Wilfred-Pumpkin: 8-Week Update! 🎃🧡

A couple of months ago many of you met Wilfred-Pumpkin the sweet spaniel who came to us with a painful elbow fracture that needed major surgery.

Well… here he is now, 8 weeks post-op, and absolutely smashing his recovery! 💪🦴

🩻 His post-op radiographs show a beautifully healed elbow, and he’s now walking comfortably and confidently.

🌟 Luna’s TPLO Progress! 🌟

Luna popped in for her six-week post-op check after her TPLO surgery for cruciate ligament rupture — and just look at her go! 👏

We perform hundreds of TPLOs every year at Dogwood Referrals, and with such reliable outcomes, we knew this superstar would smash her recovery. 💪🐾

Well done, Luna — she’ll be cruising into Christmas walks in no time… hopefully rewarded with a present or two (and maybe a cheeky dropped roast potato!). 💙🎄🐶

💙🐾 Dogwood Patient Success Story! 🐾💙

We had the pleasure of seeing Milo the Burmese back this week for his post-op check — and he couldn’t have been sweeter! 😻

You might remember him from September when we shared a post about his fractured left ankle.
Well… great news — Milo’s fracture has completely healed, his pins are out, and he’s now back home plotting his grand return to the wilds of his garden 🌿✨

Well done, Milo — what an absolute beauty!

🐾 Meet Charlie, the Springer Spaniel with the spring back in his step!

After struggling with wrist joint mobility issues, his owner, Lynn, took him to the local vet, who referred him to the team at Medivet Dogwood Referrals.
