I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Clara Wong Wing Yee.

I first met Clara in 2014 at Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, where she was part of Professor PC Ho’s Hand Unit. Even then it was clear she was exceptional. She grew into a gifted hand and wrist surgeon with a deep commitment to wrist arthroscopy and scaphoid surgery.

She kindly accepted my invitation to the Cardiff BSSH Meeting in October 2016, travelling to share her experience through several lectures on arthroscopy and scaphoid nonunion. I remain grateful that she came.

Beyond her professional achievements, Clara was warm, generous and humble. A truly lovely person who carried her talent lightly.

She died young on 26.2.26 after a two year battle with lung cancer. Her passing is a profound loss to her family, her colleagues in Hong Kong, and to our wider hand surgery community.

I feel privileged to have known her.

Rest in peace, Clara.

A pleasure to spend time at in Doha with .hagert

Elisabet is widely known for her work in hand and peripheral nerve surgery, and it was valuable for me to observe her in action. I had the opportunity to see for myself (as a sceptic!) the controversial scratch collapse test performed on three patients with consistent responses. She has seamlessly integrated point-of-care ultrasound in her clinical practice.

In this session, I will share practical guidance on how to approach a fellowship with clarity.

We will cover:
• Choosing a fellowship that aligns with your career goals
• Understanding the operative exposure and responsibility to look for
• Building a strong case portfolio and logbook
• Using research, audit, and service improvement to strengthen your profile
• Finding mentorship and preparing for the transition to a consultant role

I will use the Salford orthoplastic experience to illustrate what a high volume training environment can offer and how to make the most of your fellowship year.

Honoured to have been invited to speak this morning at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), Manhattan, New York on CMCJ arthroplasty for thumb base osteoarthritis.

With recent FDA approval, CMCJ arthroplasty is now entering early clinical adoption in the United States, in contrast to its more established use in parts of Europe. We discussed an evidence-based overview of the condition and its management, covering disease biology, patient selection, indications and contraindications, surgical technique, complications, and reported outcomes.

Thank you to Drs Scott Wolfe Duretti Fufa Samir Trehan and Steve Lee for the invitation and for an open, high-quality discussion on how this evolving option may integrate into current approaches to thumb CMCJ osteoarthritis.

A productive and inspiring weekend in beautiful Nice setting the European Hand Exam (EBHS) questions, followed by FESSH Executive and Council meetings.
