Chorlton Wanderers

Chorlton Wanderers Fancy a relaxed bike ride in an informal group rather than a club run? Then Chorlton Wanderers is fo We are an informal group rather than an organised club.

If you are looking to join other cyclists for a gentle Sunday ride, perhaps you should give Chorlton wanderers a try. We meet once a month for a leisurely bike ride around the lanes of south Manchester / Cheshire of around 35 miles, taking in a pub lunch, enjoying the scenery and general chat. If you’ve not ridden for a while or are looking for a relaxed way to find new routes and friends, then the Wanderers are for you. We meet on the second Sunday of the month in Chorlton Water Park car park, off Maitland Road, at 10am, returning at around 4pm. You don’t need any paperwork or formality. You just need to turn up with a road worthy bicycle, a puncture repair kit and (given the Manchester weather) a water proof. Children over 15 are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Given the mileage, younger children can join if on trailer bikes or baby seats. So if you are looking for an enjoyable day out, come and join us on our Wanderings. The Chorlton Wanderers rides replace the Dawdling Doctors rides that were run by the Bicycle Doctor shop in Rusholme.

Information on this Sunday's Chorlton Wander from ride leader Josh:-

"Hi everyone,

Next Wander will be a mostly flat but longish route to Northwich via Cheshire lanes.

Meet this Sunday at 10 am for a 10.15 departure from Chorlton Water Park.

Lunch will be about 1 pm at The Bowling Green, Northwich so bring snacks if you need them!

The ride will be 45-50 miles through Cheshire lanes, mostly flat with only gentle inclines.

It's virtually all paved apart from a few miles or so of well compacted gravel - good for almost all bikes except those with the skinniest tyres.

Hope to see you all there.

Josh"

A quick overview of the Chorlton Wanders for Q1 (including this coming Sunday's Wander with a change of lunch venue).
We'll post the rest of the rides when we've completed the preparations.

January 8th Dunham, 28 miles, the Rope and Anchor pub

Route is through the Cheshire lanes but does involve some short hill sections to stretch your legs before we drop down to the Rope and Anchor in Dunham Woodhouses. Nothing too demanding!

February 12th Lymm, 32 miles, the Golden Fleece pub

Out via Bucklow Hill, Hoo Green and Sworton Heath before dropping into the centre of Lymm. There are a couple of short climbs that are not too challenging

March 12th Little Bollington, 33 miles, Ye Olde Number 3 pub

This ride is mostly flat, with one long gradual climb, the reward being a nice descent just before arriving at the pub

December's Chorlton Wander.

The December Chorlton Wander is next Sunday, 11th December.
We're going to Irlam Station café.
We'll leave Chorlton (CH) via Stretford and the Trafford Centre, before we pick up the Port Of Salford Greenway. After that, we'll climb the Roe Green Loop-line towards the guided busway before descending to cross the East Lancs Road near Astley Green. After that, we'll ride over Chat Moss to the Station.
The return is fairly short; across Irlam Locks then around the back of Flixton, over Urmston Meadows and the TPT to home.
A lot of the route is off-road on well surfaced bike tracks but Chat Moss is very bumpy and certain parts of the TPT need care because of loose surfaces..
Total distance is about 33 miles and the only significant climb is on the Loop-line; it's not steep but it is long.
Please bring working front and rear lights, especially if you intend to join us for post-ride, pre-Xmas drinks. Please also check your bike over paying particular attention to the tyres.
You'll need to look carefully at the weather forecast and dress accordingly; it looks like it will be really cold.

Depart 10.15 prompt from Chorlton Water Park in front of the warden's hut.

Lunch at the Railway pub in Mobberley railwayinnpub.com. Meet at Chorlton Water Park for 10, to leave 10.15 prompt. Please bring warm clothing and working lights.

We hope you can join us next Sunday.

The next Chorlton Wander is on Sunday, 9th October. It will leave, as usual, at 10.00, from in front of the Warden's hut in the car park of Chorlton Water Park.

Info from the ride leader Mark:-

"Sundays ride takes us along the full length of the Fallowfield Loop to Fairfield, then on to Daisy Nook. We pass through Daisy Nook up passed the old canal locks and into Woodhouses for lunch at the Woodhouse Gardens pub. After lunch we pick up the old canal to Park Bridge Iron Works then up a short steep rise to pick up the old rail track (NR626) back into Ashton then its on road until we get to Fairfield again & back down the Floop. If the weather is not good we can shorten the ride after lunch by dropping down the hill into Clayton Vale and pick up the Floop again
Lots of traffic free miles, some quiet lanes and unfortunately some short sections of busy roads towards the end of the Park Bridge option.

Probably best suited to bikes with broader tyres, if you have a choice of bikes, something other than a road race bike with narrow slick tyres. Make sure you can get into your lowest gear, tyres pumped up to the correct pressure, brakes working and dress for the weather on the day.

IMPORTANT - Before you set off on Sunday make sure your tyres are free from debris i.e. glass & metal fragments, when its wet tyres puncture more easily as the water helps lubricate the rubber and aids pe*******on through the tyre. Punctures are never welcome but especially unwelcome in the rain!

See you Sunday morning"

Due to holidays, we're posting this a little earlier than usual.
The Wander is a week on Sunday, 11th September.
Info from the ride leader Steve:-

"Wander Sunday 11 September to Ringley (Horseshoe Inn)

Now that we are in September the routes start to get a bit shorter. We will head to Ringley in North Manchester, covering 35 miles. This Wander will use a lot of off-road trails, most of which are good to very good quality, but there will be some sections where skinny tyres may struggle. Gradients are gentle, except for one drag on the road up out of Ringley, but the gradient here is steady. Return will use some old railway “Looplines” and sections of the Bridgewater canal and other trails, with road sections linking everything together.

Lunch will be at the Horseshoe Inn https://thehorseshoeringleyvillage.co.uk"

As usual, meet in front of the warden's hut at Chorlton Water Park (end of Maitland Road) at 10.00, bring clothing suitable for the forecast weather, enough food and drink to get you to Ringley and please check your bike over. Pay particular attention to the tyres.

Info from the ride leader about this Sunday's Chorlton Wander:-
"Good morning all,

This Sunday I will be leading a Wander. The destination is the Harrington Arms at Gawsworth. This is a relatively challenging Wander, there are hills but not as severe as the Tour de Macc. We will be using the cycle track alongside the A555 & will be going through Poynton to join the Middlewood Way. We will then proceed to Gawsworth via Macclesfield. After lunch we will return via Alderley Edge, Wilmslow & the airport perimeter track.
As usual I would ask you to check over your bike & in particular make sure your brakes & tyres are in good order. The lunch stop is 25 miles into the ride (45 miles in total) so please bring snacks & drinks to get you through. The surfaces are varied road & track - skinny tyres are not ideal therefore.
We will be leaving from Chorlton Water Park at 10am prompt.
Look forward to seeing you

Dave"
